Vattenfall has secured awards for two offshore wind projects in Denmark's latest offshore wind tender, with the Swedish energy company set to develop the Hesselø project in the Kattegat Sea and the North Sea I Mid project off the country's western coast.

Together, the two developments represent a combined minimum installed capacity of 1,800 MW and will add substantially to Vattenfall's existing offshore presence in one of its most established European markets.

Two Distinct Locations, One Tender Round

The Hesselø offshore wind project is situated in the Kattegat Sea, the body of water lying between Denmark and Sweden, positioned approximately 30 kilometres from the coast.

It carries a minimum installed capacity of 800 MW. The second project, North Sea I Mid, is located in the North Sea roughly 20 kilometres off the coast near the town of Hvide Sande on Denmark's western seaboard, and has a minimum capacity of 1,000 MW.

Grid connection has been reserved for both projects, with the designated connection point located approximately 50 kilometres inland from the coast. The consents awarded for each project will run for 30 years, with an option to extend by a further 10 years, providing long-term operational certainty for the developments.

Building on an Established Danish Presence

The two awards add to what Vattenfall describes as an existing Danish offshore wind portfolio of approximately 1.5 gigawatts. The company currently operates five offshore wind farms in Denmark, which together generate around 6.5 terawatt-hours of electricity annually. That output is sufficient to power approximately 1.5 million homes, according to Vattenfall's own figures.

Denmark has long been a core market for Vattenfall's offshore wind operations, with the company citing the country's wind resources and established offshore infrastructure as factors underpinning its continued investment there.

The latest tender awards extend that commitment significantly, with both Hesselø and North Sea I Mid described as contributions to Denmark's broader fossil-free energy production goals.

David Flood, Head of Business Unit Offshore at Vattenfall, said the dual award reflected the company's continuing intention to expand its offshore wind portfolio across Europe.

"Winning both projects reflects our continued ambition to grow our offshore wind portfolio and support the electrification of industry and society," Flood said in the company's statement. "Wind power, together with other fossil-free sources of generation, can help meet the growing demand for clean electricity in Europe."

Flood added that the projects demonstrated Vattenfall's approach to scaling offshore wind while maintaining a focus on what he described as affordability and long-term value. The company framed both developments as part of a wider effort to meet rising demand for reliable, locally produced electricity across the European market.

The awards were announced on 4 August 2026 and come as Vattenfall has been active across multiple offshore wind development fronts in recent months. The company reached a construction milestone at its Nordlicht offshore wind cluster in Germany on 1 July 2026, when the first monopile was installed for the Nordlicht I wind farm, described by Vattenfall as Germany's largest offshore wind project.

Separately, Vattenfall and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, operating through their joint venture Zeevonk, awarded a contract to marine contractor DEME in July 2026 for the transport and installation of foundations for the first phase of the Zeevonk offshore wind farm.

The Hesselø and North Sea I Mid awards represent the company's latest steps in what has been a period of accelerated offshore wind activity across northern Europe, spanning Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands.
