The UK government has given the green light to One Earth Solar Farm, set to become the country's second-largest solar farm, as part of an ongoing push to expand domestically generated clean energy and reduce reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets.

A Landmark Approval in a Broader Clean Energy Drive

The approval, announced by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, marks the 30th nationally significant renewable energy project sanctioned by the government since July 2024.

Collectively, those 30 projects represent enough clean energy capacity to power the equivalent of more than 19 million homes. The One Earth decision also stands as the 42nd nationally significant project of any kind approved during the current Parliament.

According to the developer, One Earth Solar Farm could power over 200,000 homes a year, which the government describes as the equivalent of half the homes in Lincolnshire.

The approval comes just one week after the government signed off on two other solar projects, Peartree Hill solar farm and Dean Moor solar farm, signalling an accelerating pace of decision-making on major energy infrastructure.

Context: Energy Security and Fossil Fuel Volatility

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband framed the decision firmly within the context of global instability and its effect on energy prices. The government cited conflict in Ukraine and what it described as the war in Iran as examples of how reliance on international fossil fuel markets has left British households and businesses exposed to price shocks beyond the country's control.

Miliband stated that the only way to achieve energy security is through a pro-growth approach to building more clean energy domestically, and described the approval as consistent with two years of policy direction under the current administration.

Solar power is identified by the government as one of the cheapest forms of electricity generation currently available, and it forms a central pillar of the government's clean power mission aimed at stabilising bills in an uncertain global environment.

One Earth in the Context of UK Solar Expansion

The approval of One Earth Solar Farm follows the government's announcement in April 2026 of consent for what it described as the UK's largest power-producing solar farm.

One Earth now takes the position of second largest in the country. The two approvals within months of each other reflect what the government characterises as the strongest period of solar deployment on record.

Government data published last month showed that 2025 was the strongest year ever recorded for solar deployment in the UK, with 269,000 installations completed across the country during that year alone.

The government has also outlined plans to roll out plug-in solar in UK retail stores and to mandate that all new homes in England are built with solar panels as a standard feature.

Planning Reforms Set to Speed Up Future Projects

Alongside the One Earth approval, the government pointed to recent reforms to the planning system designed to accelerate the consenting of major infrastructure.

Last week, the government confirmed changes that will scrap mandatory pre-application consultation requirements for major infrastructure projects. According to the government, this reform will cut up to 12 months from the planning process and could save industry as much as one billion pounds during the course of this Parliament.

Those changes are being delivered through what the government calls the landmark Planning and Infrastructure Act and are set to come into effect later this month.

Officials presented the reforms as integral to the government's wider growth agenda, enabling clean energy projects to move from proposal to construction more quickly while maintaining the rigour of the planning process itself.

The Planning Process and Next Steps for One Earth

The government stated that the One Earth decision followed a rigorous planning process that considered impacts on local communities, land use and the environment. Officials noted that solar farms occupy a small proportion of agricultural land while contributing to broader energy security objectives.

Now that consent has been granted, the developer is able to move forward with the next stage of the project. This includes meeting any planning requirements attached to the approval order before construction can begin. The government did not provide a specific construction start date or a projected completion timeline in the announcement.

A Growing List of Consented Projects

The 30 clean energy projects approved since July 2024 span a range of technologies and locations across the UK. Offshore wind projects in the list include Rampion 2, Mona, Morgan, Morecambe, Five Estuaries, Outer Dowsing, Dogger Bank South and North Falls.

Solar approvals include Sunnica Energy Farm, Mallard Pass, Gate Burton, Cottam, Heckington Fen, West Burton, North Lincolnshire Green Energy Park, East Yorkshire, Oaklands Farm, Byers Gill, Tillbridge, Stonestreet Green, Helios, Fenwick, Springwell, Dean Moor, Peartree Hill and now One Earth. The list also includes the Bramford to Twinstead power line, the Viking carbon capture and storage project, and the Cory Decarbonisation project.
