TRICERA Energy and Westfalen Weser Sign Contract for Battery Storage System in Blomberg, Germany

TRICERA Energy GmbH and Westfalen Weser, a municipal energy services provider based in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region of Germany, have signed a contract for the construction of a large-scale battery energy storage system in the town of Blomberg. The project marks one of the most significant storage installations in TRICERA Energy's company history, measured by capacity.

A Joint Venture at the Heart of the Project

The Blomberg battery storage facility is being developed as a joint venture between Westfalen Weser and Blomberger Versorgungsbetriebe GmbH, a local utility operator.

The two organizations have established a newly formed joint venture specifically to realize the project, combining regional energy expertise with the technical capabilities of TRICERA Energy as the appointed engineering, procurement, and construction contractor.

TRICERA Energy has been engaged in the role of Full Turn Key EPC contractor, taking responsibility for the planning, manufacturing, delivery, construction, and commissioning of the fully operational large-scale battery storage system. The company describes itself as a general contractor and system integrator specializing in large-scale battery storage installations.

System Specifications and Grid Services

The battery storage system is designed to deliver a power output of 25 megawatts and a storage capacity of 55 megawatt-hours. Once operational, the installation is intended to provide grid services, specifically primary control reserve and secondary control reserve, as well as to participate in energy trading markets.

Primary and secondary control reserve services are critical components of grid frequency regulation in Germany and across European power markets. Storage systems providing these services respond automatically to fluctuations in grid frequency, helping to maintain the stability of the electricity network.

The combination of grid service provision and energy trading participation reflects a dual-revenue model that has become increasingly common among large-scale battery storage operators in Germany.

Construction Timeline and Current Status

Preliminary construction work at the grid connection point and on the battery storage site has already commenced. The official construction start is planned for the third quarter of 2026, with commissioning of the completed system targeted for the third quarter of 2027.

The project therefore has a development horizon spanning approximately two years from the formal construction launch to the point at which the storage system is expected to become operational.

Statements from Project Partners

Dr. Markus Laukamp, managing director of Westfalen Weser Energiespeicher GmbH, commented on the significance of the project for the region. "With the construction of the battery storage facility in Blomberg, we are setting an important milestone for the sustainable energy supply of our region," he said. "The collaboration with TRICERA Energy enables us to realize innovative storage solutions and to actively help shape the future of the energy transition."

Tim Müller, Ph.D., chief technology officer of TRICERA Energy, highlighted both the scale of the undertaking and what the project demonstrates about the company's ability to grow its operations.

"We are very pleased to be able to implement another major project in Blomberg together with Blomberger Versorgungsbetriebe and Westfalen Weser Energie," he said.

"The project is a great sign that we are keeping pace with market requirements and can scale our solution without major hurdles. We thank Westfalen Weser for their trust in our performance and we are now getting to work together."

Project Scale Within TRICERA Energy's Portfolio

TRICERA Energy has characterized the Blomberg project as one of the largest storage systems in the company's history on a capacity basis. The 55 MWh figure places it among the more substantial battery storage projects being developed in the German market, where grid-scale storage is expanding as the country continues its transition toward higher shares of renewable generation.

The involvement of Westfalen Weser, described as a communal or municipal energy service provider rooted in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region, reflects a broader pattern in Germany where regional utilities are increasingly investing directly in storage infrastructure rather than relying solely on independent power producers or energy traders to provide grid balancing services.

The establishment of a dedicated joint venture between Westfalen Weser and Blomberger Versorgungsbetriebe GmbH to own and operate the facility suggests a long-term ownership and operational commitment from both municipal entities, with TRICERA Energy providing the technical expertise and contractor services to bring the system to completion.
