Toyota Motor Corporation's North American arm has inked a virtual power purchase agreement to offtake the majority of the production of a 100-MW solar plant in DeSoto County, Mississippi.

The order, which was announced on Wednesday, is for an 80-MW component of Clearway Energy Group's 100-MW Wildflower solar project in California, which is near Toyota's facility. In 2023, the solar park is expected to open for business. Clearway and Toyota have signed their second VPPA. Last year, the automaker agreed to purchase electricity from the 110-MW Black Rock wind project in West Virginia, which is nearing completion.

The 80-MW VPPA is a step toward Toyota's goal of becoming carbon neutral in its US facilities by 2035. The arrangement is estimated to provide electricity equivalent to 8% of Toyota's North American grid consumption.
