TotalEnergies has taken the Final Investment Decision for the Ima gas field development offshore Nigeria, a project designed to deliver a substantial share of the feedgas needed for the Nigeria LNG Train 7 expansion that will significantly increase the country's liquefaction capacity.
A New Offshore Development in Shallow Waters
The FID was announced on September 23, 2026, with TotalEnergies acting as operator holding a 40% stake alongside its partner AMNI, a Nigerian company that holds the remaining 60%. The Ima gas field straddles the OML 112 and OML 117 offshore licenses in Nigeria, positioned in shallow waters close to Bonny Island.
The development plan centers on a single platform that will be connected to Nigeria LNG through a 22-kilometer pipeline. TotalEnergies holds a 15% interest in Nigeria LNG. Production from the Ima field is expected to begin in 2028, reaching a plateau rate of 350 million cubic feet per day, equivalent to more than 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
At that production level, the Ima field will supply approximately one-third of the gas required for the Nigeria LNG Train 7 expansion project, which aims to increase the liquefaction plant's capacity from 22 million tons per annum to 30 million tons per annum.
Low-Cost and Low-Emissions Design
TotalEnergies has characterized Ima as a low-cost and low-emissions development, citing a series of design and operational choices intended to minimize the project's environmental footprint.
The platform design has been described as simplified, and the facility will draw its electric power supply from shore rather than relying on onsite generation. The project will operate with no flaring, and permanent methane detection and monitoring systems will be in place throughout operations.
These features place Ima alongside other projects TotalEnergies has pursued in Nigeria under what the company describes as its integrated gas strategy, taking advantage of incentives introduced by the Nigerian government for non-associated gas developments.

Nigerian Content and Community Commitments
The partnership structure and contractor selection reflect a deliberate emphasis on Nigerian participation. All key contractors on the Ima project are local companies, and TotalEnergies has stated that around 60% of the workforce during the project development phase is expected to be sourced from host communities. The company has framed these commitments as contributing to local community development alongside the broader energy supply objectives of the project.
Nicolas Terraz, President Exploration and Production at TotalEnergies, described the FID as a new milestone in the company's integrated gas strategy in Nigeria. He referenced the Ubeta project, which was sanctioned in 2024 and is expected to start up in 2027, as evidence of a broader pattern of unlocking low-cost, low-emissions gas resources in the country. Terraz said the Ima project would contribute significantly to Nigeria LNG gas supply and create lasting value for its partners and for Nigeria.
Context Within TotalEnergies' Nigeria Operations
TotalEnergies has maintained a presence in Nigeria for more than 60 years and employs more than 1,800 people across its various business segments in the country.
Nigeria represents one of the principal contributors to TotalEnergies' global hydrocarbon production, with output from the country reaching 188,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025. In addition to its upstream activities, TotalEnergies operates an extensive downstream distribution network in Nigeria comprising approximately 540 service stations.
The Ima FID follows the earlier sanctioning of the Ubeta gas project in 2024, reinforcing a sequence of non-associated gas investments TotalEnergies has pursued in Nigeria in response to government incentives designed to attract development of such resources. Both projects are tied to supplying the Nigeria LNG facility at Bonny Island, whose Train 7 expansion represents a major increase in the country's export liquefaction capacity.
NLNG Train 7 Supply Chain Taking Shape
The Train 7 expansion at Nigeria LNG has been one of the most significant infrastructure developments in the Nigerian gas sector in recent years, with the project targeting an increase of eight million tons per annum in liquefaction capacity.
Securing the upstream gas supply to underpin that expansion has been a central challenge, and the Ima field's projected contribution of roughly one-third of the required feedgas represents a material step toward filling that supply gap.
With production from Ima not expected until 2028, the timeline aligns with the broader schedule for the Train 7 expansion to reach operational capacity. TotalEnergies' dual role as operator of the Ima upstream development and as a shareholder in Nigeria LNG places the company at both ends of the supply chain for this expansion, from wellhead to liquefaction terminal.
Staying Ahead of Nigeria's Oil & Gas Pipeline Has Never Been More Critical
Across Nigeria, the pace of oil and gas development is accelerating, new exploration blocks are being awarded, infrastructure corridors are expanding, and capital is flowing into upstream and downstream projects at a rate that rewards those who move first and punishes those who react too late.
The organizations winning work in Nigeria's oil and gas sector are not simply the most capable; they are the most informed. Knowing where projects stand, which tenders are live, and which contracts have just been awarded is the difference between a proposal submitted on time and an opportunity missed entirely.
