TotalEnergies and Eni Greenlight Cyprus's First Gas Field Development, Targeting European LNG Supply by 2028

TotalEnergies (energy company) and Eni (oil and gas company) have taken the Final Investment Decision to develop the Cronos gas field offshore Cyprus, marking the Mediterranean island's first-ever gas development project.

 

The two companies, each holding a 50% stake in Cyprus offshore Block 6, announced the decision on July 28, 2026, setting the project on course for first production in 2028 with a plateau output equivalent to approximately 2.8 million tonnes of LNG per year.

A Landmark Moment for Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean

The Cronos field, located in deep offshore waters approximately 185 kilometers southwest of the Cypriot coast, was discovered in 2022 and successfully appraised in 2024.

 

With the FID now confirmed, Cronos becomes Cyprus's inaugural gas development, a milestone that TotalEnergies Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Patrick Pouyanné described as foundational to a broader regional ambition.

 

"As Cyprus' first gas development project, Cronos will support the development of a new regional gas hub in the Eastern Mediterranean, leveraging Egypt's infrastructure," Pouyanné said in a statement accompanying the announcement.

Eni serves as the operator of Block 6, while TotalEnergies holds its equal 50% interest. TotalEnergies is also present elsewhere in Cypriot waters, holding positions in offshore Blocks 11, 7, and 8.

 

Four Subsea Wells and a Pipeline Route Through Egypt

The development plan calls for four subsea wells to be drilled at the Cronos field. Gas produced from those wells will be transported via subsea pipeline from Cypriot waters into Egypt, where it will be processed and liquefied at the Damietta LNG terminal before being exported to European markets. The routing of Cypriot gas through Egyptian infrastructure is central to the project's commercial and logistical structure.

Plateau production is expected to reach 500 million cubic feet per day, which translates to roughly 2.8 million tonnes of LNG per year. TotalEnergies will market 50% of that LNG output, equivalent to 1.4 million tonnes per year.

Leveraging Existing Egyptian Infrastructure for Speed and Efficiency

A key feature of the Cronos development is its deliberate reliance on infrastructure already in place in Egypt. The project will make use of existing offshore facilities associated with the Zohr field, an arrangement that the companies say generates significant synergies and enables a fast-track development timeline.

 

By avoiding the need to construct new liquefaction capacity from scratch, the partners expect to accelerate the project's start-up date and reduce the carbon intensity of the field's production.

To formalize the commercial and regulatory framework surrounding these arrangements, a series of agreements has been signed. These cover the terms for using Zohr's offshore facilities, the transit of gas through Egyptian territory, the liquefaction services at Damietta LNG, and the sale of the resulting LNG volumes. These agreements followed the signature in February 2025 of a Host Government Agreement, which had set out the principal terms governing the project.

Positioning Cronos Within Europe's Energy Security Strategy

The timing of the FID reflects continuing pressure across Europe to diversify natural gas supply sources and reduce dependence on any single supplier or route.

 

TotalEnergies has framed the Cronos development explicitly within that context, describing the project as contributing to European energy security through a new Mediterranean LNG corridor.

Pouyanné stated that "this new gas route in the Mediterranean will contribute to Europe's energy security by diversifying its LNG supply sources." The company emphasized that Cronos aligns with its broader strategy of prioritizing what it describes as low-cost and low-emission projects, given the synergies derived from existing Egyptian processing capacity.

A Building Block in TotalEnergies' LNG Growth Plan

For TotalEnergies, the Cronos FID is one piece of a larger ambition to grow its global LNG portfolio to 60 million tonnes per year by 2030. The company currently holds a global LNG portfolio of 44 million tonnes as of 2025, a figure that positions it as the world's third largest LNG player.

 

TotalEnergies holds interests in liquefaction plants across multiple geographies and maintains access to more than 20 million tonnes per year of regasification capacity in Europe, alongside trading and LNG bunkering operations.

The company has also stated a target of increasing the share of natural gas in its overall sales mix to close to 50% by 2030, as part of a strategy to reduce carbon emissions and eliminate methane emissions across the gas value chain.

Additional Resources in Block 6 Could Follow

Beyond the Cronos field itself, the project's partners have indicated that the development could serve as a platform for unlocking further resources within Block 6.

 

The press release noted that the project could enable, in the future, the development of additional resources located in the block, which will be appraised during upcoming exploration and appraisal campaigns. No timeline or volume estimates were provided for those potential additional resources.
