Tokyo Electron Limited (TEL), the world's fourth-largest manufacturer of semiconductor production equipment, has announced plans to set up a new development center in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The announcement was made by Karnataka's Minister for IT and Biotechnology, Priyank Kharge, during an official state delegation visit to Japan.

Strategic Focus and Collaboration

Tokyo Electron's new facility will focus on software development, simulation, and equipment design for semiconductor manufacturing. The center will also foster collaboration with Indian universities and technical institutions on the most advanced research and innovation in next-generation semiconductor technologies. This move lines up with the Indian government's broader push to localize and strengthen the semiconductor value chain, as part of its Semicon India initiative.

Minister Patil emphasized that the center will also work on developing advanced materials and improving production efficiencies, both critical areas for the evolving global semiconductor supply chain.

Known as India's Silicon Valley, Bengaluru contributes more than 35% of the country's electronics system design and manufacturing (ESDM) exports and is home to over 400 chip design companies. This strong technical ecosystem, coupled with a deep pool of engineering talent, makes it an ideal location for TEL's strategic expansion. “Bengaluru continues to solidify its position as the innovation capital of India,” said Minister Kharge.

The announcement follows a high-level meeting between Tokyo Electron executives and Karnataka's official delegation in Tokyo, led by Industries Minister M.B. Patil.
