Sunsure Energy has signed a Battery Energy Discharge Purchase Agreement (BEDPA) with NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVN) for 500 MWh peak power supply from a battery energy storage system to Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation. The agreement, announced on Thursday, secures a capacity of 125MW/500MWh and represents a significant development in India's energy storage sector.
Agreement Structure and Duration
The partnership is supported by a 15-year agreement under which Sunsure will supply power to NVVN, with Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd. (UPPCL) serving as the ultimate procurer. NVVN is a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Ltd. This arrangement marks Sunsure's first long-term power supply agreement through battery energy storage systems. Under the terms of the agreement, Sunsure will establish a standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) using a build-own-operate model. The facility will be located at the Garautha substation (400/220 kV) in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.
Operational Framework and Power Delivery
The battery energy storage system will deliver 4 hours of on-demand power between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. This operational window provides UPPCL with the flexibility to source clean energy during peak demand hours, whether in the evening or morning, at competitive and long-term tariffs. The agreement introduces what is described as a historic shift in India's energy storage ecosystem.
Unlike traditional arrangements that use fixed monthly rates, this first-of-its-kind BESS agreement bases billing on a fixed tariff (Rs/kWh) of discharged energy.

Company Background and Strategic Evolution
Sunsure Energy is described as a renewable energy solutions provider for businesses and utilities transitioning to green power. The company has evolved its offerings from pure solar solutions to hybrid systems incorporating battery energy storage systems. Shashank Sharma, Founder, Chairman & CEO of Sunsure Energy, outlined the company's progression in a statement.
He noted that the company has moved from pure solar offerings to hybrid systems with BESS, enabling commercial and industrial customers to access renewable energy even during peak hours while displacing more fossil energy from their energy mix.
Industry Significance and Market Position
Sharma described the company's evolution on the utility side as moving from winning SECI's pure solar bids to SJVN's advanced hybrid tenders, and now to NVVN's first-of-its-kind BESS deployment in the country. This progression demonstrates the company's expanding capabilities across different segments of the renewable energy market.
The agreement represents a notable development in India's energy storage landscape, particularly given its innovative billing structure, which is based on discharged energy rather than fixed monthly payments. The project will enable UPPCL to access clean energy during critical peak demand periods while maintaining competitive pricing through long-term tariff arrangements.
The 15-year duration of the agreement provides long-term stability for both parties, and it reflects the growing confidence in battery energy storage technology as a viable solution for peak power supply needs. The location in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, positions the facility to serve one of India's most populous states during periods of highest electricity demand.
