Singapore-based data center operator ST Telemedia Global Data Centers has closed a green financing facility of up to USD 1.37 billion to fund the development of its data center campus in Johor, Malaysia, marking one of the larger green financing transactions tied to digital infrastructure in the region.
Structure of the Financing Package
The facility includes a green loan component for the first phase of the STT Johor campus. United Overseas Bank Malaysia acted as the sole coordinator and mandated lead arranger on the transaction. Three additional banks participated as mandated lead arrangers: OCBC Bank Malaysia, Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia, and CIMB Bank.
The involvement of multiple Malaysian banking institutions in structuring the package reflects growing domestic financial market participation in large-scale digital infrastructure development in the country.
Campus Scale and Location
STT Johor is located at the Nusa Cemerlang Industrial Park in Johor and is designed to support a development capacity of up to 166 megawatts of IT load. The campus is positioned to serve demand across cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing workloads.
The site also sits in proximity to the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, a cross-border economic initiative established between the Malaysian and Singaporean governments. STT GDC noted the campus is capable of supporting activity tied to that initiative.

Sustainability and Financing Strategy
Nelson Lim, chief financial officer of STT GDC, said the green loan structure aligned with the company's broader approach to integrating sustainability considerations into both its financing activities and its data center operations.
The use of green loan instruments rather than conventional financing reflects a trend among data center operators to connect capital raises to environmental credentials, particularly as large facilities come under scrutiny for their energy consumption.
The company did not disclose the specific green loan framework criteria or the environmental benchmarks the Johor campus is required to meet under the facility's terms.
Malaysia Strategy and Local Commitments
Darryll Sinnappa, STT GDC's country head for Malaysia, said the STT Johor campus is intended to support Malaysia's broader digital economy ambitions. He also referenced the company's commitment to investing in local skills development and partnerships as part of its presence in the country.
Malaysia has positioned itself as an increasingly active destination for regional data center investment, with both its land availability and lower power costs compared to Singapore drawing operators looking to expand their Southeast Asian footprints.
Johor, in particular, has emerged as a concentration point for data center development, partly due to its geographic proximity to Singapore and its inclusion in the special economic zone framework.
STT GDC's Regional and Global Footprint
STT GDC currently operates data centers across 12 markets globally. Its operational presence spans Singapore, the United Kingdom, Germany, India, Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia, among others. The company has been expanding its platform in Asia in recent periods, including extending its data center operations into South Korea.
The Johor campus represents part of that ongoing regional buildout, with the 166-megawatt development capacity giving STT GDC significant room to scale its Malaysian operations as customer demand for AI-related and cloud infrastructure continues to grow across Southeast Asia.
Broader Context for Green Data Center Financing
The USD 1.37 billion facility sits at the intersection of two growing trends in the Asia-Pacific infrastructure space: the rapid expansion of data center capacity driven by AI and cloud adoption, and the increasing use of sustainability-linked or green financing instruments to fund that expansion.
Lenders across the region have been developing green loan and sustainability-linked loan frameworks specifically adapted to digital infrastructure, as data centers become a more prominent category within broader environmental, social, and governance-focused lending portfolios.
The participation of four banks in this transaction, with a Malaysian bank in the coordinator role, also signals the depth of local capital market interest in underwriting large data center projects within Malaysia itself.
STT GDC's announcement did not specify a timeline for the completion of the first phase of the STT Johor campus or provide a projected in-service date for the initial megawatts of capacity.
