Statkraft and cement company Opterra have agreed to 30-GWh/yr wind PPA

Last Updated on 08th January 2024

Statkraft AS, a Norwegian renewable energy company, has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to deliver 30 GWh of onshore wind energy annually to three plants owned by Leipzig-based cement company Opterra in Germany.

Four wind farms in Germany will provide green electricity to Opterra's production sites in Saxony-Anhalt, Baden-Württemberg, and North Rhine-Westphalia between 2022 and 2025.

Statkraft said on Thursday that the contracted output will be enough to cover the average yearly power use of 7,500 four-person households.

Statkraft stated that the PPA with Opterra will ensure that the wind farms remain operational because they no longer get fixed remuneration under the EEG scheme.

Opterra, a subsidiary of Dublin-based construction materials company CRH Plc, produces cement and concrete at five locations across Germany, and the agreement with Statkraft will aid in the company's attempts to reduce carbon emissions.

"With the electricity that we will purchase through Statkraft from 2022, we continue the move towards converting our plant operations to sustainable energies. The agreement gives the sustainability initiative launched this year the necessary tailwind for the implementation of further measures," said Opterra's chief executive Danilo Buscaglia.
