SSE Begins Construction on 208 MW Strathy South Wind Farm in Scottish Highlands
SSE has commenced construction of the 208-megawatt (MW) Strathy South wind farm in the Scottish Highlands, marking a major step in the company’s effort to expand renewable energy production in the UK. The onshore wind project is expected to provide enough electricity to power approximately 200,000 homes each year once operational in late 2027.
A Key Component of UK’s Clean Energy Transition
Located in Sutherland, adjacent to SSE’s existing Strathy North site, the Strathy South development consists of 35 turbines supplied by Vestas. Each turbine will be a V162-6.2 MW model, contributing to the project’s total capacity under a 15-year Contract for Difference (CfD) secured in the UK government’s Allocation Round 5.
UK Energy Minister Michael Shanks praised the development, highlighting onshore wind as central to the country’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan. “Delivering more onshore wind is at the heart of our mission to become a clean energy superpower,” he said.
Boost to Local Jobs and Supply Chain
Scottish contractor RJ McLeod is leading construction efforts, with the project expected to support up to 125 full-time roles at peak construction. The company has previously collaborated with SSE on several wind projects, including Strathy North and the Viking wind farm in Shetland.
The wind farm is also set to bolster the regional supply chain, contributing to local economic growth during its development phase.

Part of SSE’s Net Zero Investment Strategy
Strathy South is part of SSE’s broader Net Zero Acceleration Programme (NZAP) Plus, a five-year strategy focused on increasing investment in UK-based renewable energy infrastructure. The initiative is aimed at securing domestic energy supply and accelerating the country’s transition to net-zero emissions.
With construction now underway, SSE reinforces its commitment to delivering homegrown, clean electricity and supporting national energy independence through sustainable development.
