South Fork Offshore Windfarm commenced its operations. Located 35 miles off the coast of Long Island, this is the first utility-scale offshore wind farm in the USA. The 12-turbine, 130-megawatt wind farm is capable of generating enough power for about 70,000 homes at full capacity. Eversource and Danish wind energy developer Orsted developed the project. The wind farm is officially delivering power to Long Island and the Rockaways.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul, along with United States Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland and other elected officials, announced the completion of the landmark South Fork Wind project. Governor Hochul stated that the completion of South Fork Wind shows that New York will aggressively pursue climate change solutions to save future generations.
South Fork Wind’s successful completion supports progress toward New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act requirements to achieve 70 percent renewable energy by 2030 and install nine gigawatts of offshore wind by 2035.
Governor Hochul recently announced two offshore wind project awards, Empire Wind I, and Sunrise Wind, for over 1,730 megawatts and USD 2 billion in near-term economic development investments. To further learn about the upcoming offshore wind energy projects in the US, explore our database.
The estimated cost of the Southfork Offshore Windfarm is around USD 637.296 million.
The primary objective of the Southfork Offshore Windfarm is to provide clean, renewable energy to approximately 70,000 homes. The wind farm consists of 12 turbines that generate 132 MW of clean energy.
In addition to providing renewable energy, the project also aims to reduce carbon emissions. Over its 25-year lifespan, it's expected to eliminate up to six million tons of carbon emissions. This is equivalent to taking 60,000 cars off the road annually.
The project also represents a significant investment in the local economy. The construction and operation of the wind farm are expected to create over 1,000 short- and long-term jobs. In summary, the Southfork Offshore Windfarm is a major step towards a sustainable future, harnessing the power of wind to generate clean energy, reduce carbon emissions, and stimulate economic activity.
The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) initially approved the project in 2017, and work on it started in February 2022, with the installation of the onshore export cable system that connects it to the Long Island electric grid. The wind farm reached its “steel in the water” milestone in June 2023 with the installation of the project’s first monopile foundation, and its final turbine was installed in February.
Utility developer Eversource and Danish wind energy developer Orsted were primarily responsible for developing the project. Long Island-based contractor Haugland Energy Group LLC (an affiliate of Haugland Group LLC) installed the underground duct bank system for South Fork Wind’s onshore transmission line and led the construction of the project’s onshore interconnection facility.
