Sonnedix, the global renewable energy company, has completed the acquisition of a 260MW battery energy storage system portfolio in Tuscania, Italy, purchased from project developer Sphera Energy.
The deal, announced on July 17, 2026, brings Sonnedix's total BESS portfolio to approximately 2.8GW and adds to an Italian footprint that recently crossed the 1GW threshold.
Two Adjacent Projects Form the Tuscania Portfolio
The acquired portfolio consists of two standalone BESS projects located adjacent to one another in Tuscania. The first project has a capacity of 160 MW with a four-hour duration, while the second stands at 100 MW, also with a four-hour duration, bringing the combined total to 260 MW/4H of battery storage capacity.
Both projects were developed by Sphera Energy, an Italy-based company dedicated exclusively to the development of utility-scale battery energy storage projects.
Launched in 2023, Sphera Energy has consented more than 900MW of projects to date from an overall pipeline of 2GW currently under development, establishing itself as one of the leading battery storage developers in the Italian market. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Italy Emerges as a Central Market in Sonnedix's Storage Strategy
The Tuscania deal represents a significant scaling of Sonnedix's storage presence in Italy, building on what the company described as its first step into battery storage in other Italian regions the previous year.
In March 2026, Sonnedix acquired six solar photovoltaic plants in Italy backed by long-term power purchase agreements, a transaction that pushed the company's total Italian capacity past 1GW. The addition of the Tuscania BESS portfolio now positions Italy as a core market within Sonnedix's broader global battery storage and hybridisation strategy.
Sonnedix currently operates a total portfolio capacity of 11GW, which includes more than 1GW under construction, 4.8GW in operation, and a development pipeline of 5GW. The company is active in Chile, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

Storage Seen as Critical to Grid Flexibility and Solar Performance
Sonnedix has framed battery storage as a central pillar of its global portfolio strategy, with storage assets described as essential tools for addressing system flexibility, affordability, and energy security as power grids absorb increasing volumes of variable renewable generation.
The company has indicated that hybridisation, pairing storage assets with existing solar generation capacity, is a directional shift applying across its entire portfolio.
Axel Thiemann, Chief Executive Officer of Sonnedix, said the Tuscania acquisition represented a move toward real scale following earlier, more measured steps into the Italian storage market.
"Batteries let us do more with the power we're already generating, storing it and deploying it when it's needed most," Thiemann said. "Hybridisation and optimisation are the direction our whole portfolio is heading, and with our long-term footprint and deep expertise in the region, Italy is well placed to lead the way."
Giuseppe Marona, Managing Director for Italy at Sonnedix, pointed to the speed with which the company has transformed its Italian business. "We've gone from building a solar base to building a genuinely flexible energy business here in under two years," Marona said.
"Storage changes what we can offer the grid, and it changes how our solar assets perform." Marona also indicated that the Tuscania portfolio would not be the company's last storage acquisition in the country.
Italy's Energy Transition Driving Battery Investment
The acquisition reflects broader dynamics playing out across the Italian energy market, where batteries are described as playing an increasingly central role in balancing supply and demand and strengthening grid resilience as the country's energy transition accelerates.
Italy has seen significant activity from both domestic and international developers seeking to deploy utility-scale storage capacity, with Sphera Energy alone having built a consented pipeline exceeding 900 MW since its founding just three years ago.
For Sonnedix, the strategic logic ties directly to its existing solar generation base in the country. By combining storage assets with solar plants already in operation, the company aims to offer more competitive and flexible power to the grid, shifting from a position of generation-only to one capable of responding to demand patterns and system needs in real time.
The Tuscania transaction is the latest in a series of moves that have rapidly expanded Sonnedix's Italian presence, transforming the country from one market among many into what the company now describes as a leading jurisdiction for its storage and hybridisation ambitions globally.
Powering Smarter Decisions Across Italy's Energy Sector
When power infrastructure investment is accelerating at pace and competition for contracts is fiercer than ever, can your business afford to operate without a clear view of what's coming next across Italy's power landscape?
The Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research gives power professionals a structured, reliable intelligence source covering the full project lifecycle, from early planning signals through to completion. Whether you're targeting grid modernisation programmes, water treatment expansions, or renewable energy connections, GPT ensures you're positioned ahead of the curve rather than reacting after the fact.
Across Italy, power markets are undergoing significant transformation driven by decarbonisation targets, ageing infrastructure replacement, and surging demand for cleaner energy systems.
