NTPC Limited has awarded a Letter of Award (LoA) to SolarWorld Energy for a 50 MW/100 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS EPC) project at Unchahar, valued at approximately USD 11.49 million. The project will be implemented at the Feroze Gandhi Unchahar Thermal Power Station (Lot-2) in Uttar Pradesh.

NTPC issued the tender for this project in November and awarded it around four months later. In a regulatory filing, SolarWorld Energy said it will undertake the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (BESS EPC) project, with an estimated completion timeline of 15 months.

Part of the Larger NTPC Battery Storage Initiative

This project forms part of NTPC's larger 2.670 GWh Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) programme, which is spread across seven thermal power stations and is aimed at enhancing grid flexibility and supporting renewable energy integration. Through this initiative, NTPC is seeking to strengthen grid stability while accelerating the integration of clean energy.

NTPC awarded this project under its broader 2.670 GWh BESS tender, which spans seven thermal power stations, including Barauni Thermal Power Station (1,000 MWh), Gadarwara Super Thermal Power Station (320 MWh), NTECL-Vallur Thermal Power Station (300 MWh), and Khargone Super Thermal Power Station (250 MWh).

NTPC also plans to set up battery energy storage projects at National Capital Power Station Dadri-II (200 MWh), Tanda Super Thermal Power Station-II (200 MWh), Bongaigaon Thermal Power Station (150 MWh), Solapur Super Thermal Power Station (Solapur) with 150 MW capacity, and Feroze Gandhi Unchahar Thermal Power Station with 100 MW capacity.

SolarWorld's Recent Project Wins

SolarWorld Energy's latest project win closely follows its earlier Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) order for a BESS project from NTPC. The company had earlier secured a 132 MW/264 MWh BESS project order. The project is located at the Solapur Super Thermal Power Station (Lot-1), with an estimated value of Rs 314.26 crore (excluding taxes).

Project Specifications and Requirements

Under the scope of work, NTPC requires the bidder to develop an interconnection with an existing thermal power station for 11 years from the completion of the Performance Guarantee (PG) test. The current project at Feroze Gandhi Unchahar Thermal Power Station is designated as Lot-2 within NTPC's broader battery storage program.
