SolarAfrica Acquires Nyakallo Solar Project from Norsk Renewables in South Africa

SolarAfrica (South African renewable energy provider) and Norsk Renewables (independent power producer) have announced an agreement under which SolarAfrica will acquire the Nyakallo solar project from Norsk Renewables, with both companies committing to advance the utility-scale development in South Africa's Limpopo province toward financial close and construction.

Project Overview and Timeline

The Nyakallo project is a utility-scale solar and battery storage development located in Limpopo, South Africa. Originally developed by Norsk Renewables with development support from Green Soll, the project has already cleared several early-stage milestones, including grid connection approvals, permitting, and initial design work.

Financial close is anticipated within the next 12 months, and the project is expected to begin delivering power to the grid in the second half of 2028. Under the terms of the transaction, SolarAfrica will assume the role of long-term owner and funding sponsor, while Norsk Renewables will continue to support the project through development, financing preparation, and commercialization activities.

Grid Position Seen as Key Differentiator

One of the project's most notable characteristics is its location within one of Eskom's key transmission corridors, which allows Nyakallo to connect directly into existing grid infrastructure.

In a South African renewable energy market where projects are frequently delayed by transmission constraints and long-lead grid upgrade requirements, this positioning is seen as a substantial competitive advantage.

Torbjørn E. Kirkeby-Garstad, CEO of Norsk Renewables, said the project's location and development status give it a level of certainty that is increasingly rare in the current market. "In a market where timelines continue to slip, projects with this level of certainty are increasingly hard to come by," he said.

Battery Storage Component Included

Nyakallo will incorporate a battery energy storage system, enabling energy generated during daylight hours to be stored and dispatched outside of solar production windows.

SolarAfrica has described this as part of its broader approach of combining utility-scale generation, storage, wheeling, and trading to deliver what it characterizes as a holistic energy solution to commercial and industrial customers.

The inclusion of storage is intended to support a more balanced and reliable energy supply, extending the project's value beyond standard daytime solar generation.

Offtake Structure and Target Market

The project is expected to follow the same offtake model used across SolarAfrica's broader portfolio, combining large anchor customers with energy traders to purchase capacity.

David McDonald, CEO of SolarAfrica, said this approach enables greater flexibility in how businesses procure electricity, moving away from traditional long-term power purchase agreements toward more dynamic procurement options enabled by trading and wheeling.

"This model enables greater flexibility in how businesses procure electricity, extending access beyond traditional long-term power purchase agreements and opening the market to a wider range of C&I users," McDonald said.

SolarAfrica described the project as part of a broader structural shift in South Africa's renewable energy market toward a more decentralized, customer-driven model, in which businesses seek greater control over how they source and manage electricity.

Strategic Fit for Both Companies

For SolarAfrica, Nyakallo represents an addition to a portfolio that already includes approximately 1.5 gigawatts of utility-scale projects in advanced development.

McDonald said the project aligns with the company's strategy of building a diversified portfolio of utility-scale renewable energy assets across South Africa, with a particular focus on serving the commercial and industrial sector.

For Norsk Renewables, the transaction reflects its stated strategy of originating and developing high-quality renewable energy assets and then partnering with long-term owners to carry those assets through to financial close and construction.

Kirkeby-Garstad said the company was proud to have advanced Nyakallo through its key development milestones and expressed confidence in the partnership with SolarAfrica going forward.

Just Energy Transition Implications

The announcement also carries significance in the context of South Africa's Just Energy Transition. Limpopo is a province historically associated with coal-based power generation, and the addition of new renewable energy capacity in the region is framed by both companies as a contribution to the country's broader energy transition objectives. No specific capacity figure for the Nyakallo project was disclosed in the announcement.

McDonald said the project is part of building toward a future where businesses have significantly more choice in how they access and manage energy. "Projects like Nyakallo are a key part of this, not just adding capacity, but enabling a more flexible, resilient and competitive energy market," he said.

Company Backgrounds

SolarAfrica was founded in 2011 and operates as a renewable energy provider and independent power producer focused on the commercial and industrial sectors in South Africa.

The company has been named African Solar Company of the Year by the Africa Solar Industry Association on two occasions, in 2021 and 2023. Norsk Renewables is a Norwegian renewable energy developer focused on utility-scale projects, currently developing a portfolio in Sub-Saharan Africa while holding operational renewable energy Projects in Brazil.

Powering Africa's Future Starts With Knowing What's Being Built Right Now

Across Africa, the power sector is undergoing a transformation at a pace and scale that few industries can match. New generation capacity, grid expansion programs, and rural electrification initiatives are reshaping the energy landscape from Cairo to Cape Town. For developers, contractors, and investors operating in this space, staying ahead of that movement is not a competitive advantage; it is a fundamental requirement.

The challenge is not a shortage of activity. It is a shortage of reliable, structured intelligence that tells you where the real opportunities are before your competitors find them. Fragmented data, delayed announcements, and incomplete project records leave too many organizations making decisions based on an incomplete picture of what is actually happening on the ground.
