Serentica Renewables Commissions 200 MWh First Phase of 1 GWh Bikaner Battery Storage Project in India

Serentica Renewables, the renewable energy arm of the Vedanta Group, has commissioned Phase 1 of its 1 gigawatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System in Bikaner, marking what the company describes as a significant entry into utility-scale energy storage for the commercial and industrial sector in India.

Phase 1 Details and Operational Design

The first phase of the Bikaner project consists of a 200 megawatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System. According to the company, the system stores surplus renewable energy generated during daylight hours and discharges it during peak demand periods, enabling the supply of clean power during nighttime.

 

Serentica stated that the project has been developed using a modular architecture designed to provide operational flexibility, scalability, and rapid response capabilities, while also strengthening grid stability and supporting higher integration of renewable energy into the broader power system. The company announced the commissioning on August 5, 2026, from New Delhi.

 

Round-the-Clock Power Arrangement for Industrial Consumers

Serentica described the Bikaner project as powering one of the world's first time-block round-the-clock renewable power arrangements for industrial consumers.

 

The company said the arrangement demonstrates how battery storage can transform intermittent renewable energy into dependable, 24-hour clean power. The commissioning is presented by Serentica as an important milestone in its stated vision of delivering firm, dispatchable renewable energy solutions that enable industries to decarbonize without compromising operational reliability.

Broader Storage Strategy and Pipeline

Serentica positioned the Bikaner commissioning as the first step in a broader energy storage strategy. The company said it has a planned 7 gigawatt-hour battery order pipeline over the next two years, which it described as part of an effort to build one of India's largest battery storage portfolios for the commercial and industrial segment.

 

The company said this pipeline reinforces its commitment to delivering reliable, sustainable, and round-the-clock clean energy solutions at scale.

Company Background and Capacity

Serentica Renewables was established in 2022 and operates as the renewable energy arm of the Vedanta Group. The company describes itself as an independent power producer committed to decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries by providing firm dispatchable renewable energy solutions. It has stated a vision to make renewables the primary energy source across India's energy landscape.

The company said it has reached 3,200 megawatts of renewable energy capacity, with ongoing projects across multiple states that leverage a mix of solar, wind, energy storage, and balancing solutions. Serentica stated that its customer base includes some of India's largest energy-intensive industries.

The company is backed by a 650 million dollar investment from KKR. Serentica said it aims to supply over 50 billion units of clean energy annually, enabling the displacement of 47 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
