The Department of Commerce has reached an initial agreement with a new nonprofit organization called SemiUS to operate the NSTC (National Semiconductor Technology Center). The agreement lays the foundation for initial operations and provides a path to the long-term execution of the ambitious CHIPS for America initiative laid out for the NSTC.

US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo stated that the US is building a strong research and development ecosystem that will boost the technological prowess of the country. NSTC will provide domestic access to advanced prototyping capabilities for the research and development of the community. The center will streamline innovation for the production of American technology on shore, while also growing domestic semiconductor fabrication plants and supporting well-paying jobs.

The main vision of the National Semiconductor Technology Center is to accelerate innovation in semiconductor technology. NSTC will provide domestic access to advanced prototyping capabilities for the research and development community to boost domestic manufacturing.

What is the Chips for America Initiative?

CHIPS for America (Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors for America) is a $52.7 billion program created by the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022. The program is designed to boost domestic semiconductor manufacturing and research in the United States. Chips for America will support a wide range of projects such as:

  • Construction of new semiconductor fabrication facilities (fabs)
  • Expansion of existing fabs
  • Semiconductor research and development (R&D)
  • Workforce development
