Sembcorp Industries, Singapore's leading energy and urban solutions provider, announced two major clean energy projects on Jurong Island on October 27, 2025, marking significant advances in the nation's renewable energy infrastructure.

Battery Storage System Expansion Through Innovative Stacking Solution

Sembcorp has successfully implemented a battery-stacking solution at its existing Jurong Island energy storage system (ESS) facility, marking the first vertical expansion of an operational ESS on the same site. This innovative approach enabled additional capacity without increasing the facility's physical footprint. Through the company's engineering capabilities in scaling infrastructure and leveraging innovative solutions, Sembcorp's ESS capacity increased from 285 MWh to 326 MWh.

The vertical expansion allows for greater energy storage density on existing land, demonstrating a solution for space-constrained environments. Building on this success, Sembcorp is exploring further opportunities to deploy battery stacking across other sections of its Jurong Island ESS, reinforcing its leadership in advanced energy storage solutions.

Grid Stability Partnership with Energy Market Authority

Following the completion of the stacked ESS units, Sembcorp will partner with the Energy Market Authority (EMA) to assess the ESS's ability to provide inertia. Inertia plays a key role in maintaining grid stability by slowing the sudden changes in electricity frequency that occur during disruptions. While traditionally provided by rotating thermal generators such as combined-cycle or open-cycle gas turbines, Singapore is now turning to advanced ESS to deliver a stable, responsive alternative as the nation increases its reliance on solar and electricity imports.

Puah Kok Keong, Chief Executive of EMA, said: “Energy storage plays an important role in enabling Singapore's energy transition. In particular, battery energy storage systems (BESS) have the potential to provide a wide range of energy services, including frequency regulation for the power grid. Our collaboration with Sembcorp will allow us to test and understand these new BESS capabilities better. The knowledge and experience gained will help EMA plan for a grid that is cleaner, smarter, and more resilient.”

Singapore's Largest Ground-Mounted Solar Installation

The Sembcorp Jurong Island Solar Farm, with an installed capacity of 118 MWp, is Singapore's largest ground-mounted solar project to date. The installation spans six interim vacant land parcels in an industrial zone, demonstrating effective utilization of available space for renewable energy generation. The solar farm generates clean energy sufficient to power approximately 33,200 four-room HDB flats annually.

This capacity represents a significant contribution to Singapore's renewable energy goals and demonstrates the potential for large-scale solar installations in industrial areas. The project demonstrates Sembcorp's ability to leverage vacant land in Singapore, unlocking greater renewable energy potential in support of the Singapore Green Plan 2030.

Strategic Positioning on Jurong Island

Koh Chiap Khiong, President & CEO of Gas and Related Services and CEO of Singapore, Sembcorp Industries, emphasized the company's long-standing presence in Singapore's industrial ecosystem. “Jurong Island is a cornerstone of Singapore's industrial ecosystem, and Sembcorp has been a long-standing partner in delivering essential energy solutions here. As Singapore's energy landscape evolves, we remain fully committed to supporting the nation's energy needs.

These initiatives demonstrate our ability to integrate and scale clean energy generation and storage technologies, reinforcing a resilient and future-ready energy ecosystem.” The projects represent Sembcorp's continued investment in Singapore's energy infrastructure, combining both renewable energy generation and advanced storage solutions on a single industrial site.

The initiatives showcase the integration of clean energy generation and storage technologies within Singapore's existing industrial framework. Both projects highlight Singapore's approach to maximizing renewable energy potential within land constraints, utilizing innovative engineering solutions and strategic partnerships with regulatory authorities to advance the nation's clean energy transition.
