Woodside Energy has taken a major step forward in its USD 12.5 billion Scarborough liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, successfully launching the project’s floating production unit (FPU) into the water. This milestone signals significant progress in one of Australia’s most ambitious energy ventures, with first LNG production on track for the second half of 2026.
Located approximately 375 kilometers off Western Australia’s Pilbara coast, the Scarborough LNG project is designed to tap into vast offshore gas reserves and deliver up to 8 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of LNG. Central to the development is the newly launched semi-submersible FPU, engineered to extract and process natural gas before sending it through a 430-kilometer subsea pipeline to the onshore Pluto LNG facility for export.
Engineering Feat on a Global Scale
Constructed by McDermott International at its Qingdao McDermott Wuchuan yard in China, the FPU showcases cutting-edge offshore engineering. The platform’s hull and topsides each weighing about 100,000 tonnes were integrated using a world-first floatover method, allowing for seamless assembly and launch.
The result is a state-of-the-art offshore unit equipped with advanced control systems and robust safety mechanisms, including comprehensive emergency response features. The complex engineering and successful deployment reflect a close collaboration between Woodside, McDermott, and global project partners.
Looking Ahead
With over 80% of the Scarborough project now complete, the successful launch of the FPU represents a major leap toward commissioning. Once operational, the facility is expected to contribute significantly to Australia's LNG export capacity, bolstering energy security and supporting economic growth.
“This achievement reflects the innovation, technical excellence, and dedication of our project team and partners,” said a Woodside spokesperson. “We are proud to be progressing a project that will play a pivotal role in the global energy transition.”
As global demand for LNG continues to grow, the Scarborough project stands as a landmark development in Australia’s energy landscape—marrying engineering innovation with environmental responsibility.
