Energiekontor AG, a leading German project developer and operator of wind and solar parks based in Bremen, has sold the Würselen wind park to German energy provider SachsenEnergie. The transaction involves the onshore wind park located in the district of Aachen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, which was put into operation in May 2025.

Wind Park Specifications and Capacity

The repowered Würselen wind park has a total generation capacity of 18.0 megawatts and benefits from an EEG feed-in tariff granted by the Federal Network Agency. SachsenEnergie NaturKraft GmbH, a subsidiary of the Dresden-based energy supplier SachsenEnergie AG, serves as the purchaser of the wind park. The facility represents a significant upgrade from its previous configuration.

Energiekontor originally planned and constructed the wind park more than 20 years ago on the site of the former Aachen coalfield. The company replaced three previous GE wind turbines, each with a generation capacity of 1.5 megawatts, with three new, more powerful wind turbines from manufacturer Vestas, each with a nominal power of 6.0 megawatts. The new V150 turbines feature a hub height of roughly 125 metres and a rotor diameter of approximately 150 metres.

The average expected annual yield of the repowered park is approximately 41 million kilowatt-hours, which is sufficient to supply more than 12,500 average households in Germany with renewable electricity and save around 31,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Operational Management and Partnership Details

Despite the ownership transfer, the park will continue to benefit from Energiekontor's long-standing experience in operational management and optimization support. This arrangement maintains continuity in the park's operations while allowing SachsenEnergie to expand its renewable energy portfolio. Peter Szabo, CEO of Energiekontor AG, emphasized the significance of repowering projects for Germany's expansion targets.

He stated that replacing old wind turbines with new, more powerful models increases electricity production, reduces the impact on people and nature, and makes wind parks fit for the future again. Szabo noted that this transaction represents the first collaboration between Energiekontor and SachsenEnergie, sending out a strong signal in favor of sustainable renewable energies.

Strategic Expansion and Sales Performance

The Würselen wind park sale forms part of Energiekontor's broader sales activity in the current financial year. The company has already sold five projects with a total nominal output of around 115 megawatts, including this wind park, with further projects at an advanced stage of the sales process. For SachsenEnergie, the acquisition represents an important step in expanding its green generation capacities.

CEO Dr Frank Brinkmann expressed satisfaction with the geographic expansion of the company's wind portfolio and diversification into other wind regions with a new partner. The wind park supports SachsenEnergie's ambitions to further expand renewable energy generation. Jens-Patric Hirtz, Head of the NaturKraft business unit, indicated openness to future collaborations to consolidate planned growth and diversify operations.

However, he emphasized the importance of achieving growth through the company's own projects, noting that SachsenEnergie continues to push ahead with project development in Saxony and beyond.

The municipal utility company plans to invest 100 million euros annually in expanding renewable energy sources.
