RWE Reaches Halfway Point at Thor Offshore Wind Farm in Denmark

RWE (renewable energy company)has installed 36 of 72 planned turbines at the Thor offshore wind farm off Denmark's west coast near Jutland, marking the halfway point in the construction of what will be the country's largest offshore wind farm when completed. The 1.1-gigawatt project remains on schedule, with turbine installation, testing and commissioning all underway.

Milestone Reached at Denmark's Largest Offshore Wind Project

The Thor offshore wind farm is being built approximately 22 kilometres off the coast near Jutland in western Denmark. RWE confirmed on 17 July 2026 that 36 turbines have now been successfully installed, with the remaining 36 to follow before the end of the year. Full testing and commissioning of the entire 72-turbine array is expected to be completed by spring 2027.

Tobias Keitel, Chief Technology Officer at RWE Offshore Wind, said the halfway milestone reflects the dedication of both the project team and supply chain partners.

 

"With every turbine we install, we move closer to delivering Denmark's largest offshore wind farm," he said. "Their commitment and dedication have kept Thor firmly on track, even in challenging situations. Our focus now is on completing the construction work and bringing Thor into full commercial operation by 2027."

Once operational, Thor is projected to produce enough green electricity to supply the equivalent of more than one million Danish households.

 

Turbine Specifications and Installation Logistics

All 72 turbines at Thor are manufactured by Siemens Gamesa, with each unit carrying a capacity of up to 15 megawatts. Every turbine stands around 148 metres above sea level and is equipped with rotor blades measuring 115 metres in length, making them among the largest in operational use at any offshore wind facility.

Installation operations are being conducted from the Port of Esbjerg, utilising the Fred. Olsen Windcarrier vessel Brave Tern to transport and erect the turbines at the offshore site. The logistics and scheduling of the remaining installation work are planned to keep the project on its trajectory toward the 2027 commercial operation date.

World First: CO2-Reduced Steel Towers Enter Offshore Wind

Thor will become the first offshore wind farm in the world to deploy carbon-reduced steel turbine towers. A total of 36 such towers, supplied by Siemens Gamesa, will be used across the project.

 

The use of CO2-reduced steel in offshore wind tower construction represents a departure from conventional manufacturing processes and marks a notable development in efforts to reduce the embedded carbon footprint of offshore wind infrastructure.

RWE has positioned this element of the project as part of its broader sustainability ambitions, noting that the material choice aligns with the company's goals around lifecycle environmental performance. The scale of the deployment at Thor, across 36 towers, makes it the first commercial application of this type of steel in the offshore wind sector worldwide.

Recyclable Rotor Blades Add Further Sustainability Dimension

Alongside the CO2-reduced steel towers, Thor will also feature recyclable rotor blades on 40 of its 72 turbines. Those 40 turbines will carry a combined total of 120 recyclable blades, with each turbine fitted with three blades as standard. The recyclable blade technology is also supplied by Siemens Gamesa.

End-of-life disposal of rotor blades has been an ongoing challenge for the wind energy industry, with conventional blades made from composite materials that are difficult to recycle.

 

The inclusion of recyclable blades on the majority of Thor's turbines represents what RWE describes as a pioneering step toward lifecycle sustainability for an offshore wind farm.

Ownership Structure and Project Governance

Thor is a joint venture between RWE, which holds a 51 percent stake, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which holds the remaining 49 percent. RWE is responsible for the construction of the project and will oversee operations throughout the full lifecycle of the wind farm.

The project is being developed and delivered under RWE Offshore Wind GmbH, with RWE acting as the lead party for all construction decisions and ongoing management after the site becomes operational.

Project Timeline and Capacity

At 1.1 gigawatts, Thor will be the largest offshore wind farm in Denmark upon completion. The project's total installed capacity across 72 turbines, each rated at up to 15 megawatts, places it among the most significant offshore wind developments in northern Europe.

 

The remaining turbine installations are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026, leaving the spring 2027 period for the finalisation of testing and commissioning work before the farm enters full commercial operation.
