RWE Gas Storage West GmbH is starting to market free storage capacity in the hydrogen storage facility currently under construction at the Gronau-Epe site in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The company has launched a binding tender on 16th June, aimed at companies that want to secure available storage capacity for hydrogen from 1st January 2028. Construction work on Germany's first commercial hydrogen storage facility is already underway, with RWE planning to fill the first cavern with hydrogen from mid-2026.

Storage Facility Details

The storage facility, once completed, will have an injection and withdrawal capacity of 50,000 cubic metres per hour and a working gas volume of around 38 million cubic metres. Around 70% of this capacity has already been marketed, with the current tender focusing on the remaining 30% that will not be available until 2028 due to technical reasons. Commercial storage operations at the facility are scheduled to start on 1st July 2027.

Tender and Market Survey

In a market survey conducted in spring 2025, RGSW asked potential customers about their requirements, incorporating the findings into the tender. This approach ensures that the storage capacity meets the needs of potential clients. The tender is an opportunity for companies to secure storage capacity for hydrogen, which will be essential for the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy.

Hydrogen Economy and Storage Infrastructure

Transport and storage infrastructure will play a crucial role in the development of the hydrogen economy. Storage facilities like the one in Gronau-Epe will help buffer fluctuations in hydrogen production from wind and solar energy, enabling hydrogen to be made available to industrial customers as needed. With the marketing of free capacity underway, RWE is moving forward with its plans to establish a key component of the emerging hydrogen economy.
