RWE Feeds First Power into German Grid from Nordseecluster A Offshore Wind Project

RWE has reached a significant operational milestone at its Nordseecluster offshore wind project off the German coast, with electricity fed into the German grid for the first time.

 

The event came just weeks after the installation of the first turbine at the site, marking consecutive milestones at what the company describes as its largest offshore wind project currently under construction.

First Power Generated at Nordseecluster A

The initial grid feed-in marks a turning point for Nordseecluster A, the first of two expansion phases at the broader Nordseecluster development. Turbine installation is described as well underway, with testing and commissioning proceeding step by step across the site.

 

The electricity now flowing into the German grid is being transmitted via two offshore substations, which bring the power up to the required transmission voltage before it reaches the grid operator's converter station and is transported to the mainland.

Nordseecluster A requires two separate offshore substations because it has two distinct grid connection points. The 44 wind turbines that make up Nordseecluster A will feed their output through this dual-substation arrangement once all units are operational.

Sven Utermöhlen, Chief Executive Officer of RWE Offshore Wind, said the progress reflected the performance of the company's teams and supply chain partners.

 

"The Nordseecluster, RWE's largest offshore wind project currently under construction, is progressing exactly as planned, with the first turbine now generating electricity and feeding power into the German grid," he said. "Once fully operational, this 1.6-gigawatt project will make an important contribution to Germany's energy security while helping to decarbonise the industry."

 

Full Commissioning of Phase A Targeted for Early 2027

With a total capacity of 660 megawatts, Nordseecluster A is scheduled to be fully connected to the grid in early 2027. The current phase of activity involves the continued installation of turbines alongside the step-by-step testing and commissioning process that will bring each unit into commercial operation. The project team has not indicated any deviation from the original schedule, with the announcement stating that progress is in line with plans.

The broader Nordseecluster project carries a combined capacity of 1.6 gigawatts across both of its phases. Together, the two wind farms are expected to generate around 6.5 terawatt hours of electricity annually once fully operational. RWE has said it intends to use the renewable output to provide energy solutions to industrial customers pursuing decarbonisation goals.

Nordseecluster B to Add 900 Megawatts from 2029

The second phase of the development, Nordseecluster B, will contribute a further 900 megawatts of capacity. Production of some components for this phase has already begun.

 

Foundation installation at the Nordseecluster B site is scheduled to start in 2027, with the installation of 60 Vestas turbines to follow in 2028. Commercial operations for Nordseecluster B are scheduled to begin in early 2029.

The phased approach to the overall project means that the full 1.6-gigawatt capacity of the Nordseecluster will not be operational until 2029, with the first phase contributing 660 megawatts from early 2027 and the second phase adding its 900 megawatts approximately two years later.

Project Structure and Ownership

Nordseecluster is a joint venture between RWE, which holds a 51 percent share, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which holds the remaining 49 percent.

 

RWE is responsible for the construction and operation of both wind farms across their entire life cycle, meaning the company retains operational control throughout the project's duration despite the shared ownership structure.

The involvement of Norges Bank Investment Management, the manager of Norway's sovereign wealth fund, reflects a broader pattern of institutional investment in large-scale offshore wind infrastructure.

 

The partnership structure places the financial exposure and potential returns of the 1.6-gigawatt project across two major entities while concentrating the technical and operational responsibilities with RWE.

Context Within Germany's Offshore Wind Buildout

The Nordseecluster project sits within Germany's ongoing effort to expand its offshore wind capacity as part of its broader energy transition. The North Sea location places the development in one of Europe's most active offshore wind zones, where multiple projects from various developers are at different stages of planning, construction, and operation.
