European independent power producer R.Power has entered into an optimization agreement with international energy trading company Axpo for one of the largest utility-scale battery energy storage systems in Poland, with the deal running through to December 31, 2037.
Project Details and Scale
The project at the center of the agreement is the Magazyn Energii Jedwabno, commonly referred to as the Jedwabno BESS, a 150 MW/300 MWh facility being developed in Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship in north-central Poland. Upon completion, the project is expected to rank among the largest battery energy storage installations of its kind in the country. Construction of the facility has already commenced.
The agreement was announced on January 23, 2026, and covers an optimization period ending at the close of 2037, representing a commitment spanning more than a decade between the two partners.
Scope of the Agreement
Under the terms of the deal, Axpo will be responsible for optimizing the operation of the BESS facility. The optimization role encompasses ensuring that the installation can participate efficiently in energy markets and provide balancing services.
Axpo Polska Managing Director Mateusz Marczewski noted that a key aspect of structuring the contract was aligning it with what he described as dynamically evolving operational and regulatory standards in Poland.
Marczewski stated that the agreement was designed to meet requirements for bankability as well as R.Power's internal procedures. He described the solution as complex and tailored to the specific needs of the investor, drawing on Axpo's experience in the Polish energy market to deliver an arrangement suited to both commercial and regulatory demands.

Building on an Established Partnership
The optimization agreement marks an extension of a working relationship between R.Power and Axpo that predates this latest deal by several years. The two companies signed a medium-term Power Purchase Agreement in 2021 covering approximately 300 MW of solar photovoltaic capacity in Poland.
That earlier arrangement established the foundation for cooperation between the two companies in the Polish energy market, and the new BESS optimization deal represents a move into a different segment of the energy business for their partnership.
Marczewski described the agreement as extending cooperation with R.Power into a new area, specifically the optimization of energy storage facilities, signaling that both companies view the Polish storage market as a growing opportunity alongside the solar sector they have previously worked in together.
Context in Poland's Energy Storage Market
The Jedwabno project's scale places it at the upper end of battery energy storage development in Poland. At 150 MW of power capacity and 300 MWh of energy capacity, the facility represents a significant commitment to grid-scale storage infrastructure in a country that, like many European markets, is working to integrate greater volumes of renewable energy while maintaining grid stability and providing balancing services.
The agreement between R.Power and Axpo underscores the growing importance of long-term commercial frameworks for storage projects, particularly as developers and lenders seek contract structures that provide revenue certainty over the operational life of such assets.
The emphasis placed by both parties on bankability in the contract design reflects the financing realities facing large-scale storage projects, where the ability to secure project finance often depends on the existence of robust long-term commercial agreements.
About the Companies
R.Power is described as a European independent power producer, operating across renewable energy development, including solar and storage projects. Axpo is an international energy trading company with a presence in the Polish market through its local entity, Axpo Polska.
The two organizations have maintained a commercial relationship in Poland since at least 2021, when their original solar PPA was signed. The new optimization agreement extends that relationship through to the end of 2037, covering a facility that has already broken ground and is moving toward operational status.
Powering Smarter Decisions Across Poland's Energy Landscape
With Poland's power sector undergoing one of its most dramatic transformations in decades, driven by renewable energy targets, grid modernisation, and energy security priorities, staying ahead of project activity is no longer optional. The organisations that move fastest are the ones with the clearest view of what is being built, funded, and tendered right now.
