rPlus Energies (renewable energy company) has announced the commercial operation of Green River Energy Center in Emery County, Utah, a combined 400-megawatt solar and 400-megawatt battery energy storage project representing the largest solar and storage facility within PacifiCorp's six-state service territory.

Project Scale and Specifications

The Green River Energy Center comprises 400 MW of solar generation paired with 400 MW of battery energy storage, totaling 1,600 megawatt-hours of storage capacity.

The project is located in Emery County, Utah, and feeds into PacifiCorp's regional grid, which serves customers across six states in the American West. The commercial operation date was formally marked during an on-site ceremony held Monday, June 22, 2026, attended by Utah Governor Spencer Cox, project partners, and community members.

rPlus Energies President and Chief Executive Officer Luigi Resta said the project was the product of years of partnership and collaboration. "Together, we believed in the vision, and today Green River Energy Center is delivering reliable power and real value to families across the American West," Resta said.

Alignment with Utah's Operation Gigawatt Initiative

The project comes directly in line with a statewide energy expansion program announced by Utah Governor Spencer Cox in 2024. Known as Operation Gigawatt, the initiative is aimed at doubling Utah's energy production over the next decade. Green River Energy Center has been cited by state officials as a concrete example of that program's progress.

Governor Cox attended the commissioning ceremony and offered remarks tying the project to the state's broader economic and energy ambitions. "Operation Gigawatt is about ensuring Utah has the reliable, homegrown energy needed to power opportunity for generations," Cox said.

"Green River Energy Center represents the kind of large-scale energy investment we need to deliver reliable energy, support rural Utah, and help power the next generation of prosperity across our state."

US Senator John Curtis also commented on the project, framing it within a national context. "Meeting America's growing energy needs will require an all-of-the-above approach, and Green River Energy Center is an important example of that effort in action," Curtis said.

"This investment strengthens our energy infrastructure, supports Utah workers and communities, and helps ensure reliable, affordable power for families and businesses across the West."

Economic Impact and Community Investment

According to rPlus Energies, the Green River Energy Center is projected to generate more than USD 55 million in property taxes directed toward schools and public services in the region. During its construction phase, the project employed hundreds of workers, with several local contractors engaged for key components of the build.

Project partners also committed USD 375,000 in scholarships for local students who plan to pursue careers in the region, with a stated focus on strengthening the area's long-term workforce in local and energy-related industries. The scholarships were announced as part of the commissioning event.

At the same ceremony, project partners announced a USD 45,000 donation to the Ferron Fire Department, which is located near the project site. The contribution was described as being in support of local emergency response services and community infrastructure.

Industry Recognition

The Green River Energy Center has drawn recognition from both national and regional organizations. Project Finance International awarded the project its "Renewables Deal of the Year, Americas" designation.

On the local level, the Emery County Business Chamber named the project its 2024 "Energy Company of the Year," citing the project's long-term investment and impact in the region.
