Renewable Power Capital (RPC) and Greenfield have received planning permission for a 49.9 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project near Cardiff, marking the third such approval in the partnership’s growing UK portfolio. The project contributes to a combined permitted capacity of 112.7 MW across three sites.
The approved BESS facility will be constructed in the Vale of Glamorgan and is expected to take between six and twelve months to complete. Once operational, it will connect to the regional distribution network, with grid connection anticipated by 2030.
As part of its environmental commitments, the project includes biodiversity enhancements such as the improvement of existing hedgerows and the development of 4,560 square metres of species-rich grassland.
Since forming their development partnership in May 2023, RPC and Greenfield have rapidly expanded their battery storage pipeline to over 5.5 gigawatts across the UK, Italy, and Finland. Energy storage is seen as a critical component in enabling a flexible and decarbonised power grid.
“Projects like this are central to achieving the Government’s 2030 target for grid decarbonisation,” said Cyrille Sokpor, Senior Vice President for UK and Poland Development at RPC.

With planning approvals in Steventon, Tredington, and now Cardiff, the partnership is positioned to play a key role in supporting the UK’s energy transition. The battery storage systems will help manage energy supply fluctuations, store surplus renewable generation, and contribute to a more stable and sustainable electricity grid.
