Root-Power, a specialist in battery energy storage systems, has received planning approval for a 38 megawatt (MW) energy storage facility in Offerton, Sunderland. The development, located off Foxcover Road, is expected to contribute significantly to local energy resilience, with the capacity to power approximately 65% of Sunderland households for two hours.

The approved project includes a substantial 58% biodiversity net gain, compared to current site conditions. It also features enhancements to a nearby Public Right of Way leading to Hastings Hill, improving accessibility for the local community.

Root-Power collaborated with the Local Authority to ensure the project design minimizes impact on surrounding heritage assets and maintains the openness of the designated greenbelt area.

In response to concerns raised by local councillors about ongoing fly-tipping along Foxcover Road, Root-Power has committed to additional measures. These include the installation of CCTV and fencing to help deter illegal dumping, as part of its broader plan for responsible development.

Neil Brooks, Managing Director of Root-Power, welcomed the decision:

“We’re pleased with the planning approval, which reflects the hard work of our development team and our focus on sustainable, community-conscious energy solutions.”

Continued Expansion of Greenbelt Energy Projects

This marks Root-Power’s fifth greenbelt battery energy storage project to receive planning consent in 2025. The company plans to begin construction soon, furthering efforts to strengthen regional electricity infrastructure and enhance long-term energy independence.

The Sunderland project adds to Root-Power’s expanding portfolio, underscoring its role in supporting the UK’s transition to clean and reliable energy.
