The emergency department at the Walsall Manor Hospital will be upgraded with the construction of a new two-story urgent care center, and the refurbishment of the existing A&E. Following the completion of the early works, the main phase of the construction may now begin. According to health officials, the reconstruction of the antiquated section is critical to ensure that the hospital can cope with the rising demand expected in the future years.

When the nearby Sandwell General Hospital is downscaled as the new Midland Metropolitan Hospital opens in Smethwick next year, hospital officials expect 10,000 additional patients to attend the Walsall hospital each year, on top of the treatment backlog caused by Covid.

Tilbury Douglas Construction is building the project, including a children's emergency department, pediatric assessment center, and acute medical unit. Ambulance access has also been enhanced.

The new facility will be built close to the old A&E, will be repurposed for additional support space. Receiving complaints from the Care Quality Commission in March, the hospital was declared to be "on track" to make significant improvements to its medical services.

The project will be completed in autumn 2022 and will meet BREEAM Excellent criteria.
