The NHPC’s 1.2 GW auction for interstate transmission system (ISTS)-connected solar power projects with 600 MW/2,400 MWh energy storage systems (ESS) has been won by Reliance Infrastructure, JBM Renewables, PNC Infratech, SAEL Industries, and Navayuga Engineering Company. The tender was floated in March 2025, and the winners were announced in July 2025. Reliance Infrastructure won 390 MW, JBM Renewables won 150 MW, PNC Infratech won 300 MW, and SAEL Industries won 300 MW at a tariff of INR 3.13 (USD 0.0365)/kWh.

Auction Details

The auction has a provision to award the winners an additional 1.2 GW under the greenshoe option. The projects will be developed on a build, own, and operate basis. Winners must utilize an ESS with a capacity of at least 0.5 MW/2 MWh for a contracted capacity of 1 MW. They must charge the ESS with solar power, and the ESS must be charged at a rate of up to 5% annually using renewable power from the green market or bilateral agreements.

Project Requirements

The projects must use commercially established and operational technologies to minimize risk and achieve timely project commissioning. Only cells and modules from the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers must be used for the projects. The tender specified that winners can set up projects at multiple locations, provided each project has a minimum capacity of 50 MW, with a minimum ESS component of 25 MW/100 MWh.
