Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc., has announced that its Carwarp Energy Park near Mildura, Victoria, Australia, has reached commercial operation, backed by a long-term power purchase agreement with Microsoft.

The 150 MWac solar facility represents a significant addition to Australia's renewable energy infrastructure and is expected to generate around 405 GWh of electricity annually.

Project Scale and Technical Specifications

The Carwarp Energy Park is connected to Australia's National Electricity Market through the 220 kV Victorian transmission network. The facility incorporates approximately 243,000 high-efficiency Canadian Solar TOPCon modules, making it one of the larger utility-scale solar installations in the region.

The project's annual generation capacity of approximately 405 GWh is sufficient to power around 65,000 Australian households with renewable energy. Recurrent Energy also projects that the facility will avoid approximately 227,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year, a figure the company equates to removing more than 49,000 internal combustion engine vehicles from the road.

In addition to its current solar capacity, Carwarp Energy Park has received planning and grid approvals to incorporate a hybrid 120 MW battery energy storage system.

Recurrent Energy stated that this approval creates a clear pathway to support grid flexibility and reliability across the National Electricity Market, with the company indicating it intends to advance the storage pathway as part of the project's future development.

Delivery Ahead of Schedule

Dylan Marx, CEO at Recurrent Energy, noted that the project reached commercial operation ahead of schedule. "Carwarp Energy Park reaching commercial operation ahead of schedule demonstrates our ability to deliver high-quality, large-scale renewable infrastructure safely and efficiently," Marx said.

"With a long-term PPA secured with Microsoft, an established community fund, and approval to incorporate energy storage, Carwarp is positioned to provide strong community benefits, clean energy, and additional grid benefits for years to come."

The project supported approximately 300 construction jobs during its development and construction phases, according to Recurrent Energy, with the company noting that local economic benefits and employment will continue through the facility's operating phase.

Microsoft's Role and Energy Strategy

The long-term power purchase agreement with Microsoft underpins the project's commercial foundation. Liz Fitch, Head of Corporate, External and Legal Affairs for Microsoft Australia and New Zealand, described the project as an important part of Australia's broader transition to a low-carbon economy.

"Australia's transition to a low-carbon economy will require sustained investment in the energy infrastructure that underpins future growth," Fitch said. "Projects like Carwarp Energy Park are an important part of that effort, adding new renewable generation to the grid while supporting regional communities and long-term economic opportunity. Fitch's reference to digital technologies and infrastructure signals the role that data center expansion and the growth of compute-intensive services are playing in driving corporate demand for clean electricity procurement through long-term agreements.

Community Benefit Fund and First Nations Initiatives

Alongside the energy output, Recurrent Energy has established a dedicated community benefit fund for Carwarp Energy Park as part of its Community CaRE program, developed in collaboration with Microsoft. The fund will be administered in Australia by Groundswell Giving and the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal.

Recurrent Energy stated that the fund is designed to support community-led climate and environmental initiatives in both rural and metropolitan communities connected to the project's wider energy and infrastructure footprint.

Explicitly included in the scope of the fund are initiatives led by First Nations communities. The company described the fund as reinforcing what it characterized as a shared commitment between Recurrent Energy and Microsoft to ensuring the energy transition delivers both clean power and enduring community value.

Recurrent Energy's Australian and Global Track Record

Carwarp Energy Park adds to Recurrent Energy's existing portfolio of large-scale renewable energy projects in Australia. The company, which operates as Canadian Solar's global development and power services business, stated it has to date successfully developed, built, and connected 12 GWp of solar projects and more than 5 GWh of energy storage projects across six continents, with those figures excluding China.

As of September 30, 2025, Recurrent Energy's global pipeline includes approximately 23 GWp of solar power and 73 GWh of energy storage capacity. The company also reported having over 14 GW of solar and energy storage projects under operations and maintenance contracts.

Canadian Solar, Recurrent Energy's parent company, was founded in 2001 and is headquartered in Kitchener, Ontario. The company reported having delivered nearly 170 GW of solar photovoltaic modules to customers globally over the past 24 years. Through its subsidiary e-STORAGE, Canadian Solar has shipped over 16 GWh of battery energy storage solutions to global markets as of September 30, 2025, with a contracted backlog of $3.1 billion as of October 31, 2025.

Victoria's Renewable Energy Targets

Recurrent Energy framed the Carwarp Energy Park's output as directly contributing to Victoria's renewable energy targets and the state's long-term decarbonization roadmap.

The project's connection through the 220 kV Victorian transmission network positions it as a meaningful contributor to the state's grid infrastructure as Australia continues to expand its renewable generation capacity.

The addition of a planned 120 MW battery storage system, once developed, would further enhance the facility's ability to support grid stability alongside its clean generation output.
