ORLEN, a Polish state-owned energy company, has received more than 1.7 billion zloty (USD 458.3 million) in grants from European Union post-pandemic recovery funds to expand its hydrogen energy projects. The funding will enable the production of hydrogen using renewable energy and support the development of infrastructure for the use of hydrogen fuel in central Europe.

Project Details

The grants will primarily support two projects, known as Green H2 and Hydrogen Eagle, which aim to produce hydrogen using renewable energy resources and municipal waste. ORLEN plans to have a production capacity equivalent to 900 MW of hydrogen fuel by 2035, with the majority of production based in Poland.

Financial Impact

The funding is part of Poland's National Recovery and Resilience Plan, which has allocated nearly 60 billion zloty (USD 16.1 billion) for various projects, including renewable energy and power grid upgrades. ORLEN's CEO, Ireneusz Fąfara, stated that the secured funds will accelerate progress in the hydrogen segment and support the advancement of this future-oriented technology.

Expansion Plans

ORLEN is building a plant in Gdańsk as part of the Green H2 project, which will use a 100-MW electrolyzer powered by renewable energy to produce hydrogen. The company also plans to develop a network of hydrogen refueling stations, with 111 stations expected to be operational by 2030. The Hydrogen Eagle project includes plans to build nine hydrogen hubs for producing and distributing the fuel across Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. ORLEN's efforts to expand its hydrogen projects are underway, with the company investing in new technologies and infrastructure to support the transition to cleaner forms of energy, and the recent funding from the EU is expected to play a significant role in this process.
