Plenitude Completes 330 MW Renopool Solar Plant in Spain, Europe

Eni's renewable energy subsidiary Plenitude has brought its Renopool photovoltaic complex in Extremadura, Spain, to full operation following the commissioning of its 200 MW southern block, completing what the company describes as the largest solar project it has ever built anywhere in the world.

Full Capacity Reached After Two-Year Build

The Renopool plant, located in the municipality of Solana de los Barros in the province of Badajoz, now operates with a total installed capacity of 330 MW. The complex comprises two distinct sections: a 130 MW northern plant and a 200 MW southern plant.

 

The northern plant entered operation in June 2025, having begun construction in February 2024. The southern plant has now been commissioned, bringing the entire project online in line with the two-year timeline Plenitude set at the outset.

The plant incorporates approximately 565,000 bifacial solar modules and has been designed with optimised land use through its layout. Plenitude expects the facility to generate an estimated annual production of 670 GWh.

 

Spain Becomes Home to 1.8 GW of Plenitude Capacity

With Renopool fully operational, Plenitude now has approximately 1.8 GW of installed renewable capacity across Spain. The company operates wind and solar projects across eight regions: Andalusia, Extremadura, Murcia, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Galicia, La Rioja, and Catalonia.

 

Beyond generation, Plenitude is active in Spain through an integrated business model that encompasses the sale of energy and energy solutions, as well as electric mobility.

Extremadura in particular has become a significant area of activity for the company, which also operates in the retail energy market in the region.

Archaeological Discoveries Managed During Construction

The construction of Renopool produced an unexpected dimension to the project: the emergence of archaeological findings during the build phase, the majority of which date back to the Chalcolithic period. Plenitude stated that it catalogued and preserved these discoveries and has laid the groundwork for future research activities.

The archaeological monitoring was carried out in compliance with applicable requirements and in coordination with the Region of Extremadura and the Municipality of Badajoz.

 

According to Plenitude, this process allowed the findings to be integrated into the broader development of the project, enabling what the company described as a harmonious coexistence between technological innovation and the protection of the area's historical heritage.

Biodiversity and Environmental Commitments Accompany the Project

In addition to the archaeological considerations, Plenitude has undertaken a series of long-term environmental initiatives connected to the project's authorisation process.

 

The company signed an agreement with the Fundación Funpasos and the University of Extremadura that will support five years of scientific studies focused on wildlife presence and soil quality within the solar plants. Plenitude described these initiatives as aimed at biodiversity conservation and environmental protection.

Mariangiola Mollicone, Head of Renewables for Western Europe and CEO of Plenitude Renewables Spain, commented on the project's completion, stating that the commissioning of Renopool confirms the company's present and future commitment to Extremadura.

 

She credited the collaboration and positive response from institutions involved as enabling the project's success and the efficient fulfilment of the planned timeline.
