OVO Energy Signs PPA with Orsted for 90MW Barrow Wind Farm

Last Updated on 08th January 2024

The UK's leading independent energy supplier, OVO Energy on 8th March announced that it has entered into a power purchase agreement with Ørsted to buy 100% of the output from its 90-MW Barrow wind farm in the East Irish Sea, off the North West coast of England.

The Barrow wind farm located near Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, has been generating electricity since September of 2006. Its 30 Vestas turbines have an output that is enough to cover the annual electricity consumption of around 80,000 homes.

The project was originally developed by Warwick Energy Ltd and later on was sold to a tie-up of UK energy group Centrica plc, Norway's Statkraft and Ørsted. Ørsted became its sole owner in 2014.

Ben Blake, CEO of OVO Energy, said "We're proud to work with Ørsted on a major power purchase agreement. In the future, we're committed to exploring how we can source more energy from renewable generation here in the UK, supporting the industry and helping to drive down costs."

This PPA aligns with Ørsted's vision of increasing the amount of renewable electricity backed by UK renewable electricity generation to almost 40% by the end of 2021.
