The ORLEN Group, in collaboration with Canada’s Northland Power, has successfully installed the first of 76 cutting-edge offshore wind turbines for the Baltic Power project, located in Polish waters of the Baltic Sea. These 15 MW turbines (the most powerful installed in Europe to date) signal a major leap forward in Poland’s transition to clean energy and the development of its offshore wind industry.

Project Highlights

The turbines are manufactured by Danish firm Vestas, with several components produced locally, including in Szczecin, Poland. When fully operational in 2026, the Baltic Power wind farm will supply electricity equivalent to around 3% of Poland’s total demand — enough to power cities like Stalowa Wola or Krosno.

Each turbine stands over 120 meters tall, and including the foundation, the total structure reaches 250 meters. The blades, each 115 meters long, sweep an area of 43,700 m² about six football fields. Some towers are constructed using recycled steel, a sustainability milestone in wind energy infrastructure.

Installation Details

The turbines are being deployed using a 160-meter-long jack-up vessel with an 11,000-tonne load capacity. Foundation work, including the placement of monopiles and transition pieces, is underway, alongside preparations for inter-array and export cable installation. The full wind farm is scheduled for commissioning in 2026 and is expected to significantly enhance Poland’s renewable energy capabilities.
