OMNIVISION announced the launch of the OG05D, which the company describes as the industry's first 2.2-micron (µm) 5-megapixel (MP) global shutter (GS) high dynamic range (HDR) CMOS image sensor purpose-built for industrial machine vision applications.

New Sensor Targets Barcode Scanning, Factory Automation, and Robotics Training Devices

The new sensor targets use cases include barcode scanners, factory automation, compact AI cameras, and humanoid robotics, particularly data-collection devices for robotics training.

At a maximum output of 146 frames per second (fps) in linear mode, the OG05D is 143% faster than previous-generation sensors, according to the company. The product combines Nyxel® near-infrared (NIR) technology, HDR, low power consumption, and a compact optical format in a stacked backside-illuminated (BSI) sensor design.

The sensor is 30% smaller than previous-generation sensors, OMNIVISION said, delivering an optimized imaging solution for industrial and robotic vision systems where imaging performance, sensor size, and power efficiency are essential.

Single-Exposure HDR Reduces Motion Artifacts

The OG05D delivers high dynamic range in a single exposure, reducing motion artifacts associated with multi-exposure HDR approaches, the company stated. The sensor addresses imaging challenges faced by traditional non-HDR sensors through its RGB-IR on-chip processing and imaging performance, combined with higher NIR quantum efficiency (QE) and low noise enabled by dual conversion gain (DCG™).

"The rapid growth of industrial machine vision and robotics is driving demand for image sensors specifically designed for these emerging applications," said Kelly Yan, staff product marketing manager at OMNIVISION.

"Our new OG05D sensor delivers the ideal combination of compact size, high-speed imaging, excellent HDR performance, and industry-leading low power consumption, enabling customers to build smaller, more capable, and power-efficient industrial vision systems."

The sensor comes in a 1/2.5-inch optical format, with a package size of 6.6 µm x 5.3 µm, which the company describes as ideal for robotic, industrial, and embedded AI camera designs. DCG HDR provides high-quality image capture across scenes containing both bright highlights and dark shadows.

According to OMNIVISION, the enhanced HDR capability improves object detection and navigation in real-world situations where lighting conditions frequently change, including in factories, warehouses, and the outdoors.

Key Technical Specifications

The OG05D features a 2.2 µm 5MP BSI global shutter with what the company calls the industry's smallest >70 dB HDR-capable pixel. Nyxel® technology enhances NIR quantum efficiency at 850nm (>55%) and 940nm (>35%).

The sensor delivers a 30% power reduction compared to the previous-generation 5MP product. HDR support includes 60 fps DCG™ single-exposure HDR on-chip combination and 60 fps 3-exposure (3s) HDR on-chip combination.

The device supports RGB, mono, and RGB-IR modes and includes RGB-IR on-chip remosaic capability.

Availability and Upcoming Industry Show

The OG05D sensor is available now for sampling, with mass production scheduled for Q4 2026, according to the announcement. Interested customers can contact OMNIVISION sales representatives or visit the company's website.

OMNIVISION will exhibit the new sensor at the VISION Show in Stuttgart, Germany, taking place October 6-8, 2026, where the company will be located in Hall 10, Booth 10D10.
