NVIDIA and Coherent Corp. announced a multiyear strategic agreement on March 2, 2026, to advance advanced optics technologies for next-generation AI infrastructure. The partnership includes a $2 billion investment from NVIDIA in Coherent to support research and development, future capacity and operations as the company builds out its U.S.-based manufacturing capabilities.

The nonexclusive agreement encompasses an NVIDIA multibillion-dollar purchase commitment and provides future access and capacity rights for advanced laser and optical networking products. The collaboration aims to develop manufacturing capacity and research capabilities that will enable the scaling of next-generation data center architecture.

Strategic Focus on Optical Infrastructure

The partnership centers on optical interconnects and advanced package integration, which both companies identify as foundational elements for the next phase of AI infrastructure. These technologies are designed to unlock ultrahigh-bandwidth, energy-efficient connectivity across AI factories.

The expanded partnership leverages NVIDIA's leadership in AI, accelerated computing and networking alongside Coherent's expertise in optical innovation and advanced manufacturing. This combination is intended to enable Coherent to scale its research and development and manufacturing capacity to support the global buildout of next-generation AI data centers.

Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, emphasized the transformative nature of computing in the current era. "Computing has fundamentally changed. In the age of AI, software runs on intelligence with tokens generated in real time by AI factories for every interaction and every context," Huang stated. He positioned the partnership as pioneering next-generation silicon photonics to enable AI infrastructure at unprecedented scale, speed and energy efficiency.

Jim Anderson, CEO of Coherent, highlighted the strategic significance of the relationship for his company's role in AI infrastructure development. "This strategic relationship underscores Coherent's role as a key enabler of next-generation AI data center infrastructure," Anderson said. He expressed pride in expanding what he described as a 20-year relationship with NVIDIA by increasing their access to include multiple product families to help build future AI data centers.

Manufacturing and Capacity Expansion

The agreement specifically supports Coherent's expansion of U.S.-based manufacturing capabilities. The $2 billion investment from NVIDIA is designated to support not only research and development activities but also future capacity and operations as Coherent scales its manufacturing infrastructure.
