NLC India Renewables has secured a 265 MW/530 MWh standalone battery energy storage system project. The project will be developed to provide large-scale energy storage capacity and support grid flexibility.

It will strengthen the integration of renewable power into the electricity system. The project is located in Haryana, India, adding to the state’s growing energy storage infrastructure.

Project Awarded At USD 0.002M Per MW Per Month

NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL) has secured SJVN's 265 MW/530 MWh standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Haryana at a tariff of USD 0.002M per MW per month. SJVN acted as the Renewable Energy Implementing Agency (REIA) for the two-hour storage project, which will serve Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (UHBVNL).

The capacity has been divided into two components: 250 MW/500 MWh under Project-1 and 15 MW/30 MWh under Project-2. Under the terms of the tender, NIRL will provide the BESS to UHBVNL on an on-demand basis to meet the utility's peak and off-peak power requirements.

Viability Gap Funding Support For The Project

The project is supported by Viability Gap Funding (VGF) of up to USD 0.019 million per MWh. This support is structured as a one-time, non-recurring expenditure and is funded through the Power System Development Fund.

Project-2, which comprises the 15 MW/30 MWh tranche, will receive support under the State Component of the VGF Scheme. Funding has been earmarked for a cumulative 30 MWh of BESS capacity allocated to Haryana.

For this 30 MWh capacity, developers are eligible for VGF of up to 0.019 million USD per MWh, or 30 percent of the capital cost, whichever is applicable. The grant will be provided as a one-time expenditure and funded through the Central Grant under the State Component of the VGF Scheme.

Context Within India's Storage Market

The project will provide 265 MW/530 MWh of standalone battery energy storage capacity to Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (UHBVNL).

The two-hour BESS will be made available on demand to support the utility’s electricity requirements during peak and off-peak periods. The system will provide stored power when required, supporting flexible power management and grid operations in Haryana.
