NGEN, the energy storage developer, has commissioned what it describes as Austria's largest battery energy storage system, bringing an 85 MW, 170 MWh facility online at Wagenham in Upper Austria and connecting it to the ancillary services market.

Project Specifications and Timeline

The Wagenham battery energy storage system, located in Pischelsdorf am Engelbach in Upper Austria, delivers 85 megawatts of power capacity and 170 megawatt-hours of energy storage, providing a two-hour duration system.

Groundbreaking took place in March 2026, with commissioning completed in September 2026, representing a six-month construction and delivery timeline from start to grid connection.

The system is now operating in the ancillary services market, meaning it is providing grid stabilisation services to the Austrian power system. NGEN stated the project was commissioned within the timeframe established at the outset of construction.

In-House Construction Cited as Key Factor

NGEN attributed the pace and schedule discipline of the Wagenham project to its decision to keep engineering and construction work within its own team rather than relying on external contractors.

The company stated that building in-house results in fewer interfaces between parties, faster decision-making, and a schedule that holds to its original targets.

NGEN noted that on an asset of this scale, adherence to schedule directly affects the return on the investment, underscoring the financial significance of on-time delivery for large battery projects.

Strategic Location Near German Interconnection

NGEN described Wagenham as sitting at a strategically significant point near the interconnection between Austria and Germany, in what the company characterised as one of the most heavily loaded parts of the European power system.

The two-hour duration of the system is designed to balance fluctuations from solar and wind generation across the daily cycle, while also being capable of responding to grid needs within seconds.

The company said Wagenham is currently the country's largest system-critical battery energy storage system and one of the larger projects of its kind anywhere in Europe.

Third Austrian Project for NGEN

Wagenham represents the third battery storage project NGEN has delivered in Austria. The company said it has been developing the Wagenham site since 2023, following earlier projects at Arnoldstein in the southern state of Carinthia and Fürstenfeld in Styria.

NGEN described the Wagenham project as moving it into a different size class on the Austrian market, reflecting the scale increase compared to its two previous installations in the country.

Austria's 2040 Storage Target

NGEN referenced Austria's national energy storage ambitions as context for the project's significance. According to the company, Austria requires 8.7 gigawatts of battery storage capacity by 2040.

The Wagenham facility, at 85 megawatts, represents a step toward that national target, though the country still faces a substantial gap between current installed capacity and what is required to meet the 2040 figure.

Powering Smarter Decisions Across Austria's Energy Landscape
