Renewable energy company Nextwind has secured EUR 1.4 billion (USD 1.6 billion) in debt financing to support the expansion of its wind energy operations across Germany. The agreement marks the largest debt financing deal to date by an independent wind energy developer in the country and includes an option to raise an additional EUR 1.3 billion over the next five years, contingent on meeting capacity targets.
The financing will help Nextwind scale its onshore wind generation capacity to 3 gigawatts (GW) by 2028. The Berlin-based company currently operates 37 wind farms, more than half of which are slated for “repowering”—a process that involves replacing older turbines with more efficient technology.
Deutsche Bank, ING Bank, and LBBW underwrote and participated in the financing. The capital injection is expected to accelerate the company’s infrastructure upgrades and future investment offerings.
“This agreement enables us to move quickly with our repowering strategy and make our projects more attractive to long-term investors,” said Lars Meyer, CEO of Nextwind.
Market Context and Investment Outlook
Nextwind’s expansion comes at a time of both opportunity and challenge in Europe’s wind sector. While Germany remains a stronghold for onshore wind energy, political uncertainties—including the rise of the far-right AfD party—pose potential risks to policy stability.
Despite external pressures, including global market fluctuations and geopolitical concerns, investor interest in renewable energy remains strong. In 2023, U.S.-based Sandbrook Capital and other firms committed up to USD 750 million to Nextwind in a separate investment round.
Looking ahead, the company plans to offer individual wind farm assets as green investment vehicles, aligning with broader European goals for sustainable finance and decarbonisation.
The successful debt raise marks a key milestone for Nextwind as it aims to expand its role in Germany’s renewable energy transition.
