Namibia Awards Italy's Zhero Molecules Environmental Approval for Renewable Energy Project
Italy's Zhero Molecules Walvis Bay has received environmental impact approval from the Namibian government for a major renewable energy project in the Erongo region. The approved project encompasses a 3GW solar installation and approximately 1.65 GW of electrolysers, supported by battery energy storage systems.
Project Specifications and Production Capacity
The green hydrogen facility is designed with scalable potential and will have the capacity to produce 98,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This hydrogen production will be converted into 550,000 tonnes of green ammonia designated for export to Europe and other markets. The solar photovoltaic system will generate 3 GW of power, while the project will incorporate a 3,500 MWh battery energy storage system. These components will be distributed across farm Bloemhof 109 in the Erongo region and portion seven of farm 58 in Walvis Bay.

Regulatory Applications and Licensing
Namibia's Electricity Control Board has received an application from Zhero Molecules for a generation licence under Section 20(1)(b) of the Electricity Act, 2007. The application seeks approval to operate the 3GW solar photovoltaic system and the battery energy storage systems across the designated farm locations.
Infrastructure and Power Distribution
The electricity generated from the solar PV site will be evacuated through a 110km transmission line to facilitate green hydrogen production. This transmission infrastructure will feed the ammonia synthesis loop, enabling the conversion of hydrogen into ammonia for export purposes. The project represents a significant development in Namibia's renewable energy sector, combining solar power generation, hydrogen production, and ammonia synthesis capabilities in a single integrated facility located in the Erongo region.
