The Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has allocated EUR 1.223 billion to seven hydrogen projects located in Aragón, Andalucía, Castilla y León, Cataluña, and Galicia. These projects will develop a total of 2.292,8 MW of electrolysis power in 12 installations and are expected to mobilize investments of approximately EUR 6 million.

Project Details

The seven projects will produce 269.142 tons of renewable hydrogen per year. The projects are distributed across different regions, with Aragón receiving the largest allocation of EUR 322 million, followed by Andalucía with EUR 304 million, Castilla y León with EUR 261 million, Galicia with EUR 170 million, and Cataluña with EUR 165 million.

Financial Impact

The allocated funds will be used to support the development of hydrogen valleys or clusters in the designated regions. The total investment is expected to be around EUR 5.821 million, with the majority of the funds coming from the NextGenEU program.

Objective and Goals

The objective of this initiative is to promote the production and consumption of renewable hydrogen on a large scale. This is part of the Plan Nacional Integrado de Energía y Clima (PNIEC), which aims to achieve 12 GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030. The development of hydrogen valleys is considered crucial for achieving this goal. The allocation of funds to these projects marks a significant step towards promoting renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions in Spain, and it is expected that these projects will have a positive impact on the environment and the economy.
