Microchip Technology has rolled out a series of new and updated data center products spanning PCIe connectivity, NVMe storage controllers, and RAID acceleration, a move the Chandler, Arizona-based semiconductor supplier says is aimed at helping organizations handle the demands that AI workloads place on modern computing architectures.

The announcement, made on October 12, 2026, covers three product areas: a new Switchtec PCIe 6.0 Low-Lane-Count switch, an enhanced Flashtec PCIe Gen 5 NVMe 5016 controller with support for post-quantum security standards, and a set of upgrades to the Adaptec SmartRAID 4300 family of NVMe RAID storage accelerators.

Together, the company positions the additions as answers to performance, security, and scalability challenges across data center and intelligent edge environments.

A Smaller Switch for Constrained Platforms

At the heart of the connectivity announcement is the Switchtec PCIe 6.0 Low-Lane-Count (LLC) switch, designed to bring PCIe Gen 6 connectivity to platforms where space and power are limited.

The device provides up to 64 PCIe Gen 6 lanes and 32 ports, with flexible x2, x4, x8 and x16 bifurcation options. One of the key features is integrated Direct Memory Access (DMA), which Microchip says supports efficient peer-to-peer data movement between connected devices while reducing host CPU involvement.

The LLC switch also carries over capabilities from the company's larger Switchtec Gen 6 devices, including PCIe Multicast and partitioning features, along with security implementations in the form of hardware root of trust and secure boot technologies.

By packaging PCIe Gen 6 capabilities into a smaller, lower-power footprint, the new device extends support to a broader range of data center and intelligent edge applications beyond what the company's larger switch devices have served.

Post-Quantum Security Comes to Flashtec Storage Controllers

On the storage side, Microchip is updating its Flashtec SSD controller portfolio with an enhanced version of the PCIe Gen 5 NVMe 5016 controller.

The update's most significant addition is support for Commercial National Security Algorithm Suite (CNSA) 2.0, a framework the company says helps customers prepare for emerging post-quantum security requirements. The updated controller builds on what Microchip describes as a high-performance, power-optimized architecture.

Dual-port capability enables highly available storage architectures through redundant data paths and load balancing, while advanced virtualization, Quality of Service (QoS) management, and flexible programmability are aimed at optimizing performance.

According to the company, these enhancements extend the Flashtec platform's ability to address evolving NAND technologies, high-capacity SSD designs, and next-generation enterprise, hyperscale, and AI deployments.

SmartRAID 4300 Gains Encryption, Resilience, and Platform Support

The third pillar of the announcement concerns the Adaptec SmartRAID 4300 family of NVMe RAID storage accelerators, which is receiving a series of updates focused on what Microchip calls practical operational needs: strengthening storage security, minimizing downtime, expanding data protection, and simplifying deployment across a wider range of environments.

On the security front, the updates add support for self-encrypting drives (SEDs) with both local and remote key management. Resilience improvements include the addition of RAID 6 and RAID 60 options. Platform compatibility is broadened through support for Linux, Debian, Ubuntu, and Microsoft Windows 11 environments.

Operational enhancements include dynamic NVMe configuration for in-service management, persistent event logging, and peer-to-peer rebuild support that provides greater CPU offload. According to Microchip, these features help reduce management overhead while minimizing service disruption.

The company is also introducing StorageCore API support, which expands integration flexibility by allowing customers to incorporate SmartRAID management into third-party tools through in-band host applications as well as customized out-of-band BMC management frameworks.

Addressing the AI Infrastructure Stack

The portfolio expansion is framed by Microchip as a response to how AI workloads are driving demand for more scalable and flexible data center architectures, with organizations seeking faster and more efficient ways to move, store, and protect data.

"Customers are looking for technology partners that can address multiple challenges across the infrastructure stack while helping simplify design and accelerate deployment," said Brian McCarson, corporate vice president and GM of Microchip's data center solutions business unit.

"By continuing to expand our portfolio, we're providing the building blocks needed to create more efficient, secure, and adaptable platforms for today's increasingly distributed and data-intensive computing environments."

The company describes the latest additions as reflecting its ongoing commitment to advancing the performance, availability, and security of next-generation computing platforms.

Development Tools and Availability

A suite of development and management tools supports the data center portfolio. ChipLink software handles configuration, diagnostics, telemetry, and debugging of PCIe switches.

Additional support includes software for device monitoring, configuration and firmware management, Flashtec NVMe controller development resources, and Adaptec storage management software. Pricing and availability vary by device.
