Meta and Reliance Industries have announced an agreement to build and lease Meta's first AI-enabled data center in India, located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, marking a significant expansion of a corporate relationship that began with a multibillion-dollar investment six years ago. The facility will be built by Reliance, with Meta leasing the capacity and covering the full cost of energy and water supporting the site.

Details of the Jamnagar Facility

The data center's first phase will deliver 168 megawatts of capacity, with options to scale beyond that initial footprint. Reliance is developing what the two companies describe as one of the largest data center campuses in the world at the Jamnagar site, chosen in part because of access to the significant energy resources required to power advanced AI-enabled infrastructure.

The facility will be powered by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater, with Meta bearing the full cost of those energy and water inputs.

Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the Jamnagar facility would help the company scale its AI infrastructure globally while deepening its long-term investment in India's economy.

Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, described the project as a transformative moment for India's digital infrastructure and characterized it as demonstrating India's readiness to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution.

A Relationship Built Since 2020

The data center agreement is the latest development in a partnership between Meta and Reliance that has evolved through several phases over the past several years. In 2020, Meta made a USD 5.7 billion investment in Jio Platforms, Reliance's digital and telecom subsidiary, with that investment directed toward accelerating connectivity and supporting small business growth across India.

The two companies subsequently deepened their collaboration through a joint venture aimed at bringing Meta's open-source AI models to Indian enterprises and developers.

Meta describes today's data center agreement as the next chapter of that relationship, extending the partnership into the physical infrastructure layer that underpins Meta's products and AI capabilities in the country.

India is identified by Meta as one of its largest and fastest-growing communities globally, and the company cited the country's rapidly growing tech-forward digital economy and massive user base as factors making it an ideal location for this level of infrastructure investment.

Connectivity Infrastructure Tied to the Project

The Jamnagar data center investment is being paired with Meta's broader network infrastructure work in the region, including Project Waterworth, which Meta describes as the world's longest subsea cable system.

The company stated that this combination of data center capacity and subsea cable connectivity is intended to bring industry-leading connectivity to the region and serve India's user community with improved speed and quality.

Nearly 1 Gigawatt of New Renewable Energy Contracted

Alongside the data center announcement, Meta disclosed that it has contracted nearly one gigawatt of new clean and renewable energy in India through agreements with two separate providers.

CleanMax will develop 837 megawatts of new solar and wind projects located in Rajasthan and Karnataka, bringing the total cumulative capacity announced with CleanMax to more than 900 megawatts. Fourth Partner Energy will develop 88 megawatts of new solar and wind projects spread across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.

Meta stated that these agreements, combined with Reliance's work to support the Jamnagar facility with renewable energy, represent a commitment to India's clean energy ecosystem.

The company said the arrangements are consistent with its global goal of matching all operations with 100 percent clean and renewable energy, and that the Indian agreements will help address Meta's value chain emissions in the region.

Strategic Significance for Meta's Global Infrastructure Push

Meta framed the Jamnagar investment as a significant milestone in its global infrastructure expansion. The company noted it is investing aggressively to expand its capacity footprint in support of its technologies, services, and AI ambitions, which serve billions of people worldwide.

The agreement with Reliance is described as serving one of Meta's fastest-growing communities and as part of a broader effort to deliver what the company referred to as personal superintelligence to users in one of the world's most dynamic digital markets.

The announcement was made with both companies presenting the agreement as a shared vision to accelerate India's digital future through investment in world-class physical infrastructure.
