Lhyfe Inaugurates Germany's Largest Commercial Renewable Hydrogen Production Site in Baden-Württemberg
Lhyfe has inaugurated its first commercial production site in Germany, establishing the country's largest commercial facility for bulk renewable hydrogen production in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Baden-Württemberg. The 10 MW capacity facility represents Lhyfe's largest production site and fourth overall, marking the company's first operation outside France.
The inauguration took place on October 14, 2025, in the presence of distinguished officials, including Winfried Kretschmann, Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg, Thekla Walker, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Energy of Baden-Württemberg, and Richard Arnold, First Mayor of Schwäbisch Gmünd. Other attendees included Nicolas Gibert-Morin from the European Commission's Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy and Dr. Joachim Bläse, District Administrator of the Ostalbkreis.
Production Capacity and Technical Specifications
The facility occupies one hectare and can produce up to 4 tons of renewable hydrogen per day through water electrolysis using renewable energy. According to the company, 4 tons of renewable hydrogen is sufficient to power 100 trucks for approximately 400 kilometers per day without emitting CO2. The site was installed at the end of 2024 and is currently undergoing reliability testing and ramp-up before commercialization begins in the coming months.
The facilities are built in a container format with stackable modules to reduce their footprint. These modules handle the entire renewable hydrogen production and distribution process, including electricity conversion, cooling, water treatment, electrolysis, hydrogen purification, compression, and filling. The filling stations allow trucks or tube trailers to drop off empty containers and collect full ones for delivery to customers.
Renewable Energy Supply and Certification
To secure its renewable electricity supply, Lhyfe has signed Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with producers in Germany, including EDPR. The Schwäbisch Gmünd site obtained RFNBO (Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin) certification in September 2025, which represents the European Union's most stringent standard for renewable hydrogen under the European Renewable Energy Directive.
The RFNBO certification confirms that Lhyfe's hydrogen production at the site is 100% renewable and complies with environmental and traceability criteria required by sustainable activities under the EU Taxonomy. This certification provides customers with proof of sustainability, making them eligible for national and European grant schemes.

Customer Base and Applications
The renewable hydrogen is intended to supply customers in the mobility and industrial sectors. Lhyfe has already announced an agreement to supply regional hydrogen refueling stations operated by H2 MOBILITY, Germany's leading hydrogen refueling station operator. The site is also expected to supply a future distribution station in Schwäbisch Gmünd, in addition to the customer base Lhyfe has already established in Baden-Württemberg.
For industrial applications, renewable hydrogen offers a carbon-free alternative to grey hydrogen and natural gas, particularly in the chemical, steel, and glass sectors. The production site could also supply the planned hydrogen-powered “H2-Aspen industrial zone.”
Funding and Regional Support
The project received substantial public funding, with EUR 2.1 million from the state of Baden-Württemberg and EUR 4.3 million from the EU through the European Regional Development Fund. It serves as a flagship project within the “H2-Wandel – Model Region for Green Hydrogen Baden-Württemberg” initiative. Minister-President Kretschmann stated that the production site represents “an important step forward in ramping up hydrogen technology” and “sends a strong signal: we are ready for a sustainable future.”
Environment Minister Walker emphasized Baden-Württemberg's role in the international hydrogen market and praised the project as an example of pioneering work toward “a sustainable and climate-neutral future.”
Existing German Operations and Logistics Network
Lhyfe has maintained a presence in Germany since 2020 through its German entity, and has already built and operated a facility in Baden-Württemberg for Deutsche Bahn as part of its “H2goesRail” project. The company began delivering renewable hydrogen in Germany in 2023. Since 2021, Lhyfe has developed significant logistics expertise through the gradual commissioning of three sites.
In 2024, the company made more than 470 deliveries in Europe with a 99% service rate. The company operates 70 high-performance tube trailers with capacities ranging from 380 to 1000 kg, managing one of the largest and most modern hydrogen container fleets in Europe. With the commissioning of the Schwäbisch Gmünd facility, Lhyfe aims to strengthen its regional network and continue supporting the development of Germany's renewable hydrogen sector by supplying mobility and industrial players who require regular and intensive supplies without needing on-site production units.
