L&T's renewables business has won a major order to develop three Battery Energy Storage System projects for a client in the Middle East, the Indian engineering conglomerate announced on August 25, 2026. The contract, classified under L&T's internal order valuation framework as "major," corresponds to a project value between USD 522 million and USD 1.045 billion.
Scope and Scale of the Contract
The three BESS projects will collectively deliver 6 gigawatt-hours of storage capacity, which L&T described as one of the most impactful advancements in grid modernisation and renewable energy integration in the Middle East region.
Each of the three projects features a 4-hour Battery Energy Storage System capable of storing and dispatching energy to support grid stability and the integration of renewable power into the regional electricity network.
Beyond the storage installations themselves, the scope of work extends to grid interconnections, including the construction of pooling substations and underground cables.
L&T will act as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor across all three packages, reinforcing what the company characterised as its position as a key EPC player in the fast-growing energy storage sector.
Technology and Design Specifications
The advanced BESS solution to be deployed across the three projects will incorporate liquid cooling technology. L&T stated that this design choice ensures higher power density, enhanced safety and extended operational life compared to alternative cooling approaches.
The 4-hour discharge capability on each system means stored energy can be dispatched over a sustained period, enabling what L&T described as effective energy shifting, a process by which surplus clean energy generated during off-peak periods is stored and then delivered to the grid during hours of peak demand.
The liquid-cooled architecture is increasingly favoured in large-scale utility battery deployments in high-ambient-temperature regions, where thermal management is a critical engineering consideration.
