Karnataka government will establish a 200-acre semiconductor park in the upcoming KWIN (Knowledge, Wellbeing and Innovation) City near Bengaluru, Minister for Large and Medium Industries M B Patil announced on Tuesday. The announcement was made at the inaugural session of the three-day Bengaluru Tech Summit at the Bengaluru International Exhibition Center.

Infrastructure and Innovation Hub Development

The proposed semiconductor park will be equipped with all the infrastructure required by semiconductor companies and will serve as a major innovation hub at both the state and national levels. Patil stated that the dedicated 200-acre Semiconductor Park will include all necessary facilities and will act as the center of all semiconductor innovation in the state and soon, the country.

The semiconductor park is part of the larger KWIN City project, which spans 5,000 acres. According to Patil, significant space within KWIN City will be allocated for research and development activities supported by a robust ecosystem.

Investment Strategy and Industrial Focus

The Department of Large and Medium Industries has prioritised attracting investments from global technology firms and major anchor investors. The government aims to channel such investments into emerging industrial segments, including drones, semiconductor devices, and solar energy, while also focusing on Industry 5.0 and other advanced industrial models.

Karnataka has allocated INR 600 crore to support technology enterprises working in artificial intelligence, machine learning, quantum technologies, robotics, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable innovation. The state government has adopted forward-looking policies in Electronics System Design & Manufacturing (ESDM), transportation systems, biotechnology, and start-up promotion.

Current Technology Ecosystem

Karnataka currently hosts more than 800 research and development centers, over 100 chip-design firms, and about 18,300 start-ups working in areas such as artificial intelligence, deep tech, quantum computing, and space technology. Patil emphasized that a strong research and development ecosystem is essential for Karnataka to retain its position as a preferred destination for investors.

The state is working closely with countries including Japan, the United States, Germany, and Singapore. Industries are also collaborating with educational institutions in biotechnology and cybersecurity sectors.

Future Technology Initiatives

A Center of Excellence for AI and Quantum Computing is being planned in Dharwad as part of Karnataka's commitment to retain its leadership in deep science and frontier technologies. The state recognises the growing importance of advanced industrial sectors and is positioning itself to remain competitive in emerging technology fields.

Patil highlighted that several technology firms in Karnataka are actively working in artificial intelligence, machine learning, quantum technologies, robotics, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable innovation, demonstrating the state's existing strength in these sectors.
