The Japanese government has selected GK Happo Noshiro Offshore Wind, which is an operating company consortium consisting of Japan Renewable Energy Corporation (JRE), Iberdrola, and Tohoku Electric Power, for the operations of a new 375 MW offshore windfarm, which will be situated off the coast of Happo Town and Noshiro City, Akita Prefecture, Japan.
The three members of the operating companies, JRE, Iberdrola, and Tohoku Electric Power, will be involved in all aspects of business execution, including development and operation. Akita Bank, together with its members, will cooperate with local companies and support the implementation of regional development measures.
The project will install 25 fixed bottom foundation wind turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW, using monopile foundations. The power plant is poised to be one of the largest Japanese offshore wind projects. This is the second round of auctions for the development of large-scale Japanese wind farms. The government aims to award a total of 1.8 GW of capacity across four blocks in this round.
By providing a stable and large-scale supply of clean energy from offshore wind power for many years to come, the project will make an important contribution towards achieving Japan’s goal to be a carbon-neutral society by 2050. The consortium will start construction by 2026, and the start of operations is scheduled for 2029. During the anticipated 30-year lifespan, the project will contribute to the medium-to long-term regional development and domestic industrial development through the long-term stable operation of renewable energy and the development of supply chains.
Increase Renewable Energy Production: This project is a key part of Japan's plan to significantly boost its offshore wind capacity. The goal is to reach 10 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 and 45 GW by 2040. This wind farm, with a capacity of 375 megawatts (MW), contributes directly to that target.
Expand Offshore Wind Industry: This project, along with others awarded recently, signals Japan's commitment to developing its offshore wind sector. It creates opportunities for companies with experience in building and operating these facilities. The involvement of a foreign company, Iberdrola, brings international expertise to this endeavor.
Clean Energy Source: Offshore wind farms generate electricity with minimal emissions, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and combating climate change.
