Global energy storage company Jinko ESS, a subsidiary of Jinko Solar Co., Ltd., has announced the complete delivery of its customized 123.8 MWh utility energy storage system to Athens International Airport (AIA). The company initiated commissioning and site acceptance tests on August 25, 2025, marking a critical milestone in what will become one of the world's largest PV-ESS self-consumption projects at an airport facility.

Project Specifications and Timeline

The energy storage system comprises 36 containerized units, each with a nominal capacity of 3.44 MWh. All equipment has arrived on-site at Athens International Airport, with commissioning officially commencing as the project enters its final construction phase. The installation represents the culmination of a strategic partnership agreement signed between Jinko ESS and Greek EPC company kIEFER TEK in June 2024.

The project timeline targets system operation before the Christmas peak travel season, according to Roberto Murgioni, Regional General Manager of Jinko ESS Europe, who stated the teams are “progressing commissioning hour by hour” to meet this deadline.

System Functionality and Airport Integration

Upon completion, Athens International Airport will utilize the Jinko ESS Utility G1 system to store clean energy produced on-site for year-round self-consumption. The system is designed to minimize or eliminate the airport's dependence on the traditional electrical grid by providing storage capabilities for renewable energy generated at the facility. The energy storage installation will serve as core infrastructure supporting AIA's carbon reduction objectives.

The system enables the airport to maximize utilization of its on-site renewable energy production by storing excess power during peak generation periods for use during times of lower renewable output.

Environmental Goals and Corporate Initiative

The energy storage system directly supports Athens International Airport's goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2025, as outlined in the airport's ROUTE 2025 corporate initiative. This environmental commitment positions the airport as a benchmark for green transformation among global transportation hubs. Roberto Murgioni characterized the project as transforming the airport gateway “into a pioneer of the Net zero-carbon era.”

The installation represents a significant step in the aviation industry's broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions through renewable energy integration and advanced storage technologies.

Partnership and Implementation

The successful delivery results from collaboration between Jinko ESS and kIEFER TEK, the Greek EPC company responsible for project implementation. Murgioni credited the “seamless collaboration between Jinko and the kIEFER TEK team” for achieving the full system arrival. The partnership demonstrates the integration of international energy storage technology with local engineering and construction expertise.

The project's scale and complexity required coordination between multiple teams to ensure proper installation and commissioning of the 36-unit containerized system across the airport facility. The Athens International Airport project establishes a new standard for renewable energy integration in the aviation sector, combining substantial storage capacity with self-consumption optimization to achieve ambitious carbon reduction targets within a compressed timeline.
