India has made significant progress in green hydrogen development, with the allocation of 862,000 tonnes per annum production capacity to 19 companies. Further, it awarded 3,000 MW annual electrolyser manufacturing capacity to 15 firms. This development is part of the country's strategic vision for renewable energy and green hydrogen production.
Renewable Energy Capacity
The country has installed over 223 GW of renewable energy, including 108 GW from solar and 51 GW from wind. This places India among the fastest-growing renewable energy markets globally. The Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, highlighted India's vision to achieve energy independence by 2047 and reach Net Zero emissions by 2070.
National Green Hydrogen Mission
The National Green Hydrogen Mission was launched in 2023, with an initial allocation of USD 2.4 billion. The mission lays out a comprehensive roadmap to identify and create demand in potential sectors. India's vision is not only to meet its domestic demand but also to become a major global exporter of green hydrogen by 2030, contributing to decarbonization action.
Pilot Projects and Global Engagement
Pilot projects have been launched in the steel, mobility, and shipping sectors. The Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, spoke at the ‘World Hydrogen Summit 2025’ in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, highlighting India's capabilities in renewable energy and green hydrogen production.
This engagement showcases India's commitment to driving the transition to green hydrogen and achieving its energy goals. The country is moving forward with its plans for green hydrogen development, with a focus on meeting domestic demand and becoming a global exporter.
