Iberdrola Receives Final Monopiles from Navantia-Windar Partnership for Baltic Sea Windanker Offshore Wind Farm
Iberdrola has received the final monopiles for its Windanker offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea, marking the completion of the second monopile contract between the energy company and the Navantia-Windar alliance. The components were manufactured by Navantia Seanergies and Windar Renovables at their joint facility at the Navantia Seanergies shipyard in Fene, A Coruña.
This delivery follows the previous monopiles built for the East Anglia THREE project and represents part of a strategic collaboration worth over 1 billion euros in orders over the last ten years. The partnership has resulted in deliveries across multiple countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the United States, demonstrating Iberdrola's confidence in Spanish companies.
Manufacturing Specifications and Investment
The monopiles produced for the Windanker project measure up to 84 metres in length, 10 metres in diameter and weigh up to 2,100 tonnes. The manufacturing process has created 300 jobs at the Fene facility. The order forms part of a framework agreement reached by the companies in summer 2021 for the manufacture and supply of XXL monopile foundations.
The factory operations required an investment of EUR 36 million to adapt the building for the bending of thick sheet metal up to 12 metres in diameter. The facility improvements included new painting booths, storage areas for finished products, and the incorporation of latest technology equipment necessary for manufacturing.
Windanker Project and Baltic Sea Hub
The Windanker offshore wind farm is located in German waters and forms part of Iberdrola's Baltic Sea hub development. When operational in 2026, Windanker will have a capacity of 315 MW and will feature new-generation turbines with a unit capacity of approximately 15 MW.
The Baltic Sea hub will have a total installed capacity of more than 1,100 MW with a combined investment of EUR 3.5 billion. The hub includes the already operational Wikinger wind farm with 350 MW capacity and the recently commissioned Baltic Eagle with 476 MW capacity.
Ongoing East Anglia THREE Project
Parallel to the Windanker completion, Navantia Seanergies and Windar Renovables are currently manufacturing monopiles for Iberdrola's East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm in UK waters. The Navantia-Windar alliance is building 45 monopiles in Fene, while Windar Renovables is manufacturing 95 transition pieces at its plant in Avilés, Asturias.
East Anglia THREE will form part of the East Anglia Hub complex, which will reach 2,900 MW of installed capacity.
Industry Leadership and Company Statements
Ricardo Domínguez, president of Navantia, expressed gratitude to Iberdrola for placing trust in Navantia Seanergies and partner Windar. He noted that Navantia celebrated a decade in offshore wind power last December since its first contract with Iberdrola, during which time the company has supplied foundations and offshore substations for Iberdrola's wind farms, strengthening the development of the national supply chain.
Orlando Alonso, executive president of Windar Renovables, stated that the company values the order from Iberdrola as proof of the high quality of their products and reliability of their processes. He emphasized their collaboration with Navantia Seanergies for more than nine years and their daily work to position the strategic business alliance at the forefront of new renewable energy developments in the European market and internationally.
Álvaro Martínez, director of offshore wind power at Iberdrola, described the delivery as further proof of Iberdrola's commitment to the Spanish industrial fabric. He stated that the company has been promoting offshore wind power generation around the world for more than 10 years and seeks to develop projects in partnership with local industry and Spanish companies through long-term agreements, providing stability, international visibility and certainty for suppliers while generating sustained activity and jobs.
Iberdrola's Offshore Wind Portfolio
Iberdrola pioneered offshore wind power by commissioning its first offshore wind farm, West of Duddon Sands, in England in 2014. The company is promoting offshore wind power globally with a portfolio of projects in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia and Japan.
At the end of the first half of 2025, Iberdrola had more than 2,470 MW of installed offshore wind capacity. The company plans to increase this to 6,500 MW by 2030 through significant investments around the world.
